Howard Hawks (1) vs. Michael Snow (16)
Hawks starting five:
Rio Bravo (1958)
The Big Sleep (1946)
Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Only Angels Have Wings (1939)
His Girl Friday (1939)
key reserves:
To Have and Have Not (1945)

Red River (1947)
Scarface (1932)
Snow starting five:
Wavelength (1967)
Presents (1981)
La Région Centrale (1971)
Back and Forth or <---> (1969)
*Corpus Callosum (2002)
key reserves:
New York Eye and Ear Control (1964)
Sshtoorrty (2005)
Puccini conservato (2008)
This is a clash of unequivocal masters who couldn't be more different and probably have no business being compared in the first place. Originally a jazz musician, Michael Snow later turned to the camera to become the preeminent artist working in experimental structuralist cinema. His epic masterpiece Wavelength went on to influence Chantal Akerman as well as countless other experimentalists and in the words of J. Hoberman, "announced the imminent passing of the film era," just as his later work would push the boundaries of the digital medium's possibilities. Amongst this group of mostly narrative filmmakers, however, he probably does not belong and against Howard Hawks, who bridged the silent and sound eras, worked in genres from gangster to comedy to western and is the bedrock on which so much of American cinema is built, he cannot survive and advance. After all Godard did call Hawks "the greatest of all American artists."
Ernst Lubitsch (8) vs. Vittorio De Sica (9)
Lubitsch starting five:
Trouble in Paradise (1932)
To Be or Not To Be (1942)
The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
Heaven Can Wait (1943)
Ninotchka (1939)
key reserves:
The Merry Widow (1934)
Angel (1937)
Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938)
De Sica starting five:
The Bicycle Thieves (1948)
Umberto D (1952)
Miracle in Milan (1951)
The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970)
Two Women (1960)
key reserves:
After the Fox (1966)
Indiscretion of an American Wife (1953)
The Children are Watching Us (1944)
This particular 8 vs. 9 matchup is a very interesting one, pitting Lubitsch's consistency against the incredible heights of De Sica's best work. Lubitsch became such a master of the urbane, yet ribald comedy of manners that the phrase "the Lubitsch touch" was coined to describe the balance he managed to strike in nearly all of his work. Something like The Shop Around the Corner or Trouble in Paradise is probably his best work, but the rest of his filmography is nearly at that same level. After his neo-Realist masterpiece The Bicycle Thieves, De Sica was wildly inconsistent, sometimes producing impressive work such as Two Women, but often coming up with junk like Woman Times Seven and continuing to work more than twenty years after the release of his last truly well-made film, Umberto D. When pressed to address the wildly varying quality of his work, De Sica responded with simplicity and humility in saying, "I am an artist and artists make mistakes." Unfortunately in this context, those mistakes will keep him from moving on in the tournament.
F.W. Murnau (4) vs. Woody Allen (13)
Murnau starting five:
Sunrise (1927)
Nosferatu (1922)
The Last Laugh (1924)
Faust (1926)
City Girl (1930)
key reserves:
Tartuffe (1925)
Phantom (1922)
Allen starting five:
Annie Hall (1977)
Sweet and Lowdown (1999)
Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)
Zelig (1983)
The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)
key reserves:
Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
Broadway Danny Rose (1985)
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982)
Manhattan (1979)
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982)
Husbands and Wives (1992)
Deconstructing Harry (1997)
Woody Allen is unquestionably one of the greatest and most natural comedy writers of all time. Critically assessing his career as a filmmaker, however, is a much thornier affair. His prolificacy, making a film a year like clockwork since 1969, works as a double edged sword, both a testament to his creativity and work ethic and what many see as the very reason that so many of his films don't rise to the level of his immense talent. He has reputation for saying almost nothing to actors in terms of direction, yet his performers are regularly lauded both critically and at award ceremonies. Despite his comic genius, he is fearless in terms of exploring other genres which has lead to some of his greatest successes as well as his worst critical and commercial beatdowns. But even when he fails, Woody Allen's films are always worth seeing, especially the early, funny ones. Even against Allen's immense filmography, though, only one of Murnau's films is needed to get him into the second round. Sunrise, ranked number five on the Sight & Sound Poll, is the pinnacle achievement of the Silent Era and one of the finest films ever made. The visual storytelling is so masterful that it turns the film into a cogent argument for the notion that the sound revolution arrived a bit too early. Of course, Murnau's life was cut tragically short, at forty-two, before he could help ease the transition. His masterpiece, Sunrise is just that: an awakening of the promise of cinema.
Roberto Rossellini (5) vs. Alain Resnais (12)
Rossellini starting five:
Journey to Italy (1954)
Rome, Open City (1945)
Il Generale della Rovere (1959)
Stromboli (1950)
Germany Year Zero (1948)
key reserves:
Europa 51 (1952)
India: Matri Bhumi (1959)
Germany Year Zero (1948)
Paisan (1946)
Resnais starting five:
Last Year at Marienbad (1961)
Hiroshima, Mon Amour (1959)
Muriel (1963)
Je t'aime je t'aime (1968)
Mélo (1986)
key reserves:
Providence (1977)
The War is Over (1966)
Stavisky . . . (1974)
My Uncle from America (1980)
Smoking/No Smoking (1993)
Private Fears in Public Places (2006)
After a brief period of making fascist propaganda films (which would haunt him for the rest of his life) Roberto Rossellini's work spun violently in the opposite direction with the anti-fascist Rome, Open City which many considered the beginning of Italian neo-Realism despite its variance from what could be called the core elements of that style (non-professional actors, documentary look, deep-focus long shots, etc.). Critical consensus no longer considers Rossellini's work neo-Realist, but the matter was not so easily dealt with at the time. After his most neo-Realist work, Paisan, he gradually drifted away from all elements of the style, enduring the wrath of Marxist critics and eventually found himself "expelled" from the neo-Realist community. If his dedication to realism faded, his search for truth never did even as his perspective remained ethnocentric and morally conservative. He reached his artistic peak in the early 1950s, culminating with the melancholic poetry of Voyage to Italy. In later years, he became disillusioned with cinema and retreated to television for a series of nuanced but dull historical films. Alain Resnais' early work also created a critical hurdle that he would have to face for the rest of a career that continues to this day. After a series of commisioned documentaries, including the chillingly beautiful Night & Fog, his first two features, Hiroshima, mon amour and Last Year at Marienbad, are two of the most bafflingly unique works of art in all of cinema. After this much of his work has been ignored, especially on this side of the pond. At the very least, Charlie Kaufman paid attention as Je t'aime je t'aime and Providence serve as clear antecedents to Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind respectively. Many critics consider Resnais to have had something of a resurgence in the 1980s, and while it is true that his work in that decade is diverse, nuanced, and captivating, there was never any dip in the quality of his post-Marienbad filmography. Add to this his experiments with the musical form and the acclaim for his two most recent features even as he works into his nineties, and you're left with one of the most underrated artists in the medium easily moving along to the second round in our second major upset.
