Richard Allen Biography

Born into slavery, Richard Allen went on to found the first national black church in the United States, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, in 1816. Read more about this minister, writer and abolitionist at Biography.com.

This is a quick biography of a man from the early republic period in America named Richard Allen.  While this could be seen as part of the religion group, his life also included sport and leisure because he was a circuit rider.  He rode around on his horse spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ(the horse being where he played into "sport and leisure).

This is a painting capturing George Washington riding one of his horses which is something he loved to do in his spare time.  Maybe this is his hose Eagle that saved his life in the river!

Horse Riding Saves George Washington

Interesting fact: while riding his horse across a river, George Wahington was "washed off his hose" but held onto it and dragged to safety.  Had he not grabbed ahold of Eagle's(his horse) head, our nations first President may have drowned in the river.

Golf in the Early Republic

Even though golf had already become successful in places like the U.K. by the late 1800s, it was only beginning to surface in early public America.  Before this time golf was a game for the rich because the manufacturing of balls and clubs was so expensive.  However, by the end of the 19th companies began to make molds for golf balls which made mass production possible, making it cheaper.
