How fast can we help or slow down the negative effects of climate change with all the changes around us happening faster than we could have expected with the climate?

Unfortunately, climate change will be in motion for decades.  The average lifetimes of greenhouse gases range from a decade to several decades.  As they mix in the atmosphere, they form a ‘blanket’ that is being reinforced by global emissions, which likely will trend upward as the economy grows after the pandemic eases.  This is why there is urgency to act within the next decade to reduce the emissions significantly.  Only then will the dissipation of greenhouse gases allow climate temperatures to stabilize.

"Astral Blooming" 🎉🌎🌷  I'll soon have all of my designs available as prints on eco-friendly paper (my etsy is closed until then). 20 percent of each purchase will go toward supporting Earth Day Network's Canopy Project. Their goal is to plant 7.8 billion trees worldwide by 2020 - one tree for every person. For every dollar they receive, they plant a tree. Each print = 6 trees. The Canopy Project has already led to millions of trees being planted on 6 continents, and it's only the beginning. Deforestation contributes to species extinction, poverty, and is responsible for up to 15 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change. Every day is a lovely day to cherish Earth. Planting trees is one of the simplest and most important ways to fight climate change.

If the climate change is imminent, how we are going to deal at a personal level if the government and the people who have the power to do something are not on board?

Personal decisions can make a difference.  Demand that your electric power provider offer green power options/generate power from renewables.  Minimize your transportation impact by limiting personal car trips or consider an electric vehicle if possible.  Consumer demand (all of us our voters) can change marketing decisions and will impact elected officials.  And, of course, vote for candidates who support immediate action to address the climate crisis. 

Again, emphasize voting. Officials pay attention to what their votes care about. Up to this moment, many people haven’t considered climate change and environmental issues when they cast their ballots. SO, it easy for officials to ignore it. BUT, this is changing before our eyes. More and more people are Voting Earth, putting the environment as their priority.

We’re in a climate crisis. We’re not almost in a climate crisis. If you need proof, look no further than the wildfires consuming the entire West Coast, the uptick in hurricanes and tropical storms, and our melting glaciers.

Will has spent his career in public service, working in the U.S. Senate and for nonprofit organizations focused on conservation and public health. Along the way, he found time to be a wildland firefighter, a high school soccer coach and to travel to more than 100 units of the national park system.

Sam Hunt runs the MobilizeU campaign and gets to spread her passion for the environment to university students and campuses around the world. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and global sustainability from the University of Virginia, where she also led waste-reduction campaigns and Earth Day efforts for the Office for Sustainability.

How can I community build in order to combat climate change?

When we organize, we can be a force to reckon with. It is great to hear you are ready to organize your community to combat climate change. Before starting any project, it is essential to first do your research. Spend some time thinking about what are the top environmental issues in your community or think about the issues your community members might care most about. Be intentional, purposeful, and specific with what you hope you accomplish. Taking the steps to move towards renewable energy – in homes and transportation - is one thing you and all your neighbors can do right now.    

Then, start reaching out to potential allies in your community—those people who are likely to say yes and sign onto your movement. Some easy wins could be young people (who are leading the environmental movement right now) and parents (especially mothers, who have historically been involved with the environment for how it impacts the health of their family).

What can someone without money do to support this cause?

This is somewhat of a lifestyle question.  But, it applies to all of us, regardless of income.  Think about your daily habits, your consumption, your travel, your electricity use, etc.   Then, reduce.  Find ways to minimize your carbon footprint. 

Don’t purchase unnecessary products; don’t waste food; consider limiting your meat consumption; use public transportation or ride a bike; utilize natural lighting in your home. When many people do this at once, the collective impact will be exponential.

And, one of the most impactful things you can do as an individual who cares is to encourage others to care too! Chat with your friends and family about why environmental issues are important, and deserve their attention too. Having these conversations can sometimes be one of the hardest ways to contribute to the cause, but I challenge you all to give it a try today. Text a friend, call a parent, post on social media.
