One idea that many educators & school administrators struggle with, today, is the usage of Easels and drawing boards in their classrooms. Some of them debate the essentiality of such an exercise usually demeaned by them for their sheer lack of knowledge in this domain. The argument they give in support is that painting or drawing is not the primary source of learning and that it could, therefore, be subsided. Add it to the extra-curriculars’ activity list, they say. That has been the usual behavior and the collective consciousness of the Indian educational psyche, at least. What has made the matters worse is the resigned consent of the parents to this dreary idea. Dreary why?
Because, an easel board is probably the only place a child would choose to talk to us. By subscribing to this “drawing not so important” notion of yours, you’ve snatched from children, their only chance of expressing their emotions and feelings to the outer world. For children with introverted personalities, this could be a total disaster. At this point, it wouldn’t be unfair to say that it is we, who hold such opinions, that need to be educated and not the kids.
Child psychologists and all those who work with children are well aware that young kids paint not to express their creativity but their emotions. Their imaginative ingenuity is at peak in this phase of their life and it is only imperative that we provide them the right outlet to do so. Here are a few reasons why painting is not only good but absolutely critical for kids-:
An easel is a free and inviting space that allows kids to release their pent-up energy and become an ‘honorary’ member of their own make-believe world. It is the place generally independent of the classroom-mannerisms and etiquettes and provides the ultimate escape to our little ones.
Especially good for developing their cognitive and motor skills. If giving the creative outlet to a child doesn’t seem too convincing an option, there is this critical advantage of muscular and sensory reception abilities, eye-hand co-ordination being the most significant one.
Sharing and co-operation is another vital aspect of kids learning drawing. Teamwork and co-ordination is not an acquired trait and takes practice to develop. This is one useful way of learning that quality making use of something as simple as an easel stand.
It would be, therefore, safe to say that when it comes to learning by young kids, there is more to painting & drawing than meets the eye. It is time we understand the nuances of how it is that easels can help create a free space for our kids where they can imagine and grow. Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most celebrated painters of all times had once famously said “The only time I feel alive is when I’m painting”. That was true for him and that is 100% true for our kids. It is up to us how we choose to make use of this liberating space.
How our pre-conceived notions are affecting kids and why we need to learn? One idea that many educators & school administrators struggle with, today, is the usage of Easels and drawing boards…
