The Eastern Buzzard, Buteo japonicus, soars majestically, its plumage tinged crimson by the sun's rays just before sunset. In Karuizawa, it is a species of raptor commonly encountered throughout the year, though sightings have been somewhat less frequent this winter. Seeing it circling repeatedly at such close range after so long, I cannot help but marvel anew at its perfectly proportioned form and the beauty of its plumage patterns.
