For avantgarde graphic designers California has long been a place for experimentation because of it's distance to the more corporate NY establishment and cultural influences ranging from mid-century modernism to novelty architecture, outsider art, cults, new age symbolism, surfing, skateboarding, punk and psychedelic rock. The design was really engaging with these various unconventional approaches and lifestyles. Pair that with the rise of the computer, new digital tools and a feared "death of print" and you know what led them off the beaten path and on to new shores. In 2014 LACMA established its Graphic Design Initiative which is currently showing some of their acquisitions made in the past 4 years. It's only a quick peak into the world of California graphic design but it goes to show the tip of the iceberg. There's a cool story waiting to be told here - a creative journey from the mid-70s on which leads us all the way to, well, Apple, I guess. Personally, I was surprised not to find one of my favorites, David Carson (the master of typography extravaganza!), in the show. But instead I discovered a number of other designers including CalArts faculty works that I hadn't seen before. I love the legacy of modernism and how it is still present and ever-resonating in California. And creatives here have found less rigid and formal, but bold new ways of expression through their embrace of new techniques, as well as a bold and inspired choice of shapes and color, consequently creating layered, at times dizzying visuals that were rich in references and, thus, provided another layer of commentary. The 2000s have been less experimental, more "economic" and streamlined. But these things tend to go in waves.
