god I can't wait
So I just beat the EarthBound Beginnings Remake (that's what it's called. Sorry. I don't call the game EarthBound Beginnings because I'm a millennial that grew up thinking America would NEVER get EarthBound again, let alone MOTHER 1).
I wanted a more or less faithful remake that's slightly more balanced than the original game, and that's more or less what you get. There IS a fan reimagining in the works, MOTHER Encore, if that's more your thing.
But yeah, this hack's greatest strength and weakness is that it is a faithful remake of MOTHER 1 in EarthBound's engine. That means some conventions that come with an RPG from that era, as well as certain quirks of EarthBound's engine, namely slowdown when there's a lot of sprites.
The maps for the dungeons are also not one to one the same as the original localization on NES, at least as far as I could tell. Of course some skills were changed to be more like EarthBound, though not all of them. The game in general is also NOT as easy as EarthBound. Again, some of the design is from the original. The artstyle is also EarthBound's, and the localization seems to be a mix of the original (so your hometown is Podunk) and Tomato's, to some degree.
Overall, the verdict? If you love Mother 1 and wanna see how it is in EarthBound? Here you go. It's not really gonna do much different from the original, as mentioned, so if that's what you want, try out the demo of MOTHER Encore. That one isn't the whole game, though. If you've never touched a MOTHER game before, let alone MOTHER 1? Well, there are certainly worse places to start.
This series just means a lot to me, being one of my formative series. And I deeply admire the people who brought this to the public. Almost 20 years, this was in the works. And it went through not one, not two, but THREE teams to get it done. One moved onto other things, and the second seemingly vanished off the face of the Earth. So at the end of the day, this is the product of the love and passion of people to whom this series also means a lot to.
Also, fair warning: Abusing Dimensional Slip (4th-D Slip in the original) in this has a nasty surprise attached to it.
