Trick or treat? Haunting Hardy's Original Sweet Shop
Everyone knows that Halloween is all about dressing up and getting candy – so why not treat yourself to an experience while stocking up for those trick or treaters? Hardy’s Original Sweet Shop is the kind of confectionary store you dream of as a kid; dark wood walls lined with shelf upon shelf of sweet-filled jars, enticing you in with all the old English favourites.
Once you’re inside, you’ll find all resistance will crumble. You can tell yourself you are there to buy for others, but your tastebuds will have different ideas. Give in and reach out for the rhubarb and custard candy or hug a humbug. It’s okay, you’re among friends…
There are American imports (the kings of candy, you might say) with Nerdz, cans of pop, Pop Tarts and mini boxes of sugared cereals to keep things interesting. But the greater attraction is their wonderful range of traditional English treats, like authentic toffee at only 99p a bar, fudge in a variety of flavours and some exceptional chocolate concoctions that you’ll find difficult to leave behind when you approach the till.
If you are struggling to make a decision there's a comprehensive pick-‘n-mix behind the counter you can have one of each. Nicely packaged gift jars line the walls so you can justify your visit and their enormous coloured candy lollipops also make great presents.
This is the kind of shop you simply must visit whilst in London. It lets you experience that child-like excitement you felt when you walked into your first sweetshop. I entered thinking I’d buy a very grown-up bar of dark chocolate and I left with a bar of toffee, some pick ‘n mix pigs made out of strawberry chocolate with candy crystals and an aeroplane-themed party pack.
