For the longest time, just long enough to begin measuring the concept's passage in weeks rather than days, the shadow doesn't speak a word.
It had said before, after all, that it is not an impatient entity.
Its presence in this world causes little disturbance, save for muttering breathlessly to itself in a manner that resembles somniloquy at odd times of the night. It does not even bother the pets or otherwise visibly affect their behavior, the way all prominent, ghostlike supernatural creatures are meant to by the unwritten law of movie tropes. It is merely an unassuming shadow, cast by nothing.
So it may come as a surprise when late one uneventful night, a question without obvious origin is spoken into the stillness.
If you still can come up with nothing that has been left untainted by your actions, why not endeavor to reverse some of the damage done?
