ECKOES reveals majestic new single ‘Without Prejudice’

London based artist ECKOES unleashes the dark majesty of her new single 'Without Prejudice'. The single reveals yet another layer of her unique sound, adding calming and quiet awe to the dizzying call-to-arms electronica of previous stunning singles ‘Hurricane of Storms’ and ‘Black & Red’.

‘Without Prejudice’ is at once both soothing and raw. ECKOES’ haunting vocals appear from a seemingly infinite open space of dark tension, layered with abstract rhythms within the song’s melodies.

ECKOES said: “'Without Prejudice' is the sobering realisation of inevitable, imminent loss. Looking at where you’re standing and knowing that it’s impossible to stay here any longer. Then looking out into the void in front of you and wondering how you’re going to do this. Again.

“I’ve left space in the song so people can fill it with their own thoughts, their own stories - I hope the music carries them away. It’s unapologetically 5 & a half minutes long because that’s how it came out, & not all art is born the perfect length for radio. I’m OK with that.”

Wednesday is World Mental Health day. It’s a day that is observed every October 10th to raise much needed awareness regarding mental health issues around the world. You can read more about it, here. ECKOES, a British musician from London who was recently scouted by Grammy Award winning producer Naughty Boy, is supporting Help Musicians UK with her new single, Hurricane of Storms, a resplendent effusion of ambient and atmospheric, soulful and cinematic chillstep-styled electronica, featuring the artist’s deep soothing, powerfully moving vocals. Glorious trumpets saturate the gripping ballad, whose widescreen yet comforting sound echoes its role as both a safe heaven and a celebration. Getting To Know...

ECKOES.

British-born Nigerian ECKOES is both a sharp-sighted futurist and a nostalgic sentimentalist. In her music and her listening habits (she’s an avowed fan of both James Blake and Maxwell) she straddles the line between cutting edge textures and soulful pop hooks.

A prolific songwriter outside of her solo project, she’s penned tracks for Tara Sutaria (The Disney Channel) and co-written and performed on releases with Danny Darko, Space Jump Salute and Le Visiteur. Her debut single ‘Valentine’ garnered support from the MOBO Awards, AFROPUNK and Fame Magazine, shooting up the digital Hype Machine charts, and she even played to Kevin Spacey at the 24 Hour Play after party along the way. As a writer and singer ECKOES constantly tests the water, fusing styles she likes with effortless grace. By turns alternative R&B, swelling soul, urban electronica, and ambient, ECKOES’ project finds itself in the hinterlands of pop. Like FKA Twigs, ECKOES isn’t beholden to reliving the past by simply repackaging it.

Atop her distinctive sound are her vocals, unique, inimitable, but with a sharp ear for classic hooks. Inside those vocals she pours her feelings and her experiences. ECKOES is one of the most intriguing and emotive new outpourings to emerge from the London circuit. At the helm of her project she stands, a six foot weaver of hypnotic sounds ever refining her craft. On the one hand familiar, relatable, on the other, a statuesque artist with an aura that’s all her own.

We had a quick chat with the artist about her latest single ‘Pieces’, her influences, struggles in the music industry and more. Read it below.

Who is ECKOES?

“I am Eckoes. I sing & create things.”

Who or what have had the biggest influences on your songwriting?

"David Bowie in his life more than his music has taught me courage. The same with Bjork. James Blake teaches me that there are no rules & Whitney taught me to vocally aim right for the aorta."

You've just released your new single 'Pieces'. What was the inspiration behind the track?

"Modern day fragmentation. We want the heat of sex & passion & love but we go into it armoured & jaded & cold. So when two bodies come together in that state, they shatter to pieces."

Do you have any shows coming up? What can we expect from an ECKOES live performance?

"The next show in November is just being finalised so keep an eye on my Facebook page. Live is the queen of music, what everything else revolves around. So this is where I get to give myself to people & invite them into my world."

You're also a songwriter for other artists. How does writing for other artists compare to writing for yourself?

"It’s very freeing. Like an actor playing a different role, trying to understand someone else’s perspective & story - it’s so interesting. Writing for yourself is a really vulnerable process."

What struggles have you personally faced in the music industry, if any? And how did you overcome them?

"I’ve struggled with trusting my gut. If you enter this industry without really knowing who you are, someone will place an identity upon you. Then you’ve just put another unnecessary layer on top of the already difficult task of digging down to who you are as an artist. But in the same vein, trying to push yourself to be a version of yourself that you may not have met yet. It’s not a simple thing we do. To overcome most pitfalls in music I just make sure it feels right. And I don’t mean safe or easy, I mean right."

Finally, whats next for ECKOES?

"I’ve just directed a video for the next single ‘SBF’ out this month. I’m so proud of it and everyone involved. There are little moments behind the scenes when you sit with a finished product and say “I created this. This thing. I gave it life” It’s beautiful. I’m also doing some live BBC Introducing sets, I’m speaking on the panel at The Norwich Sound & Vision Festival & 2 more singles out by the years end. Life is good, life is full."
