Seeing this poster in the classroom reminded me of the importance of having memorable examples of literacy rules. I liked how there was a simple and easy to remember sentence that used all 3 of the sounds that the morpheme ‘ed’ makes.
I was lucky enough to teach in Vanuatu last year, and we made some great classroom displays for each letter of the alphabet. I found this gave the students a great chance to give their own personal twist on each letter, as well as make their own classroom feel ‘homey’ like it was their own, as they did spend a lot of time in the classroom! I believe classroom displays help give the room a little bit of personality.
During regular volunteering in a grade prep class, I was able to demonstrate and create a poster of numbers 1-10. This meant choosing a number from 1-10 (writing the number and decorating it big and centered) and drawing different ways to represent the number such as on the tens frame, dice number symbol, paddle sticks, beans etc. The students watched my demonstration of one number, then they were to create their own of numbers posters that were then made into a book for their own reference and also hung around the room.
The activity I would do for this novel would definitely be a task getting the students to draw a plot diagram of the story’s progression. Both the title and images are intriguing and could conjure up wild imaginations in children and having them create the start of some kind of graphic novel panels would be very appealing. Another way of doing this would be to pair the title with a different image drawn from within the book, and have half the students make predictions about what the story could be about using the first picture and the other half of the students, using the exact same words, get the other picture, hopefully something drastically different and see how they infer a different meaning from the visual stimuli provided to them.
To me, that’s pure H.P. Lovecraft right there.
Week 2
A simple predication activity that I would do for the book ‘Are you seeing me?’ would be getting students to write down some dot points on what they think the book is about from just the title first. After they have made some predictions I would then show students the front cover and have them do the same thing. Do their predications change? Or stay the same?.
