My 2016 Resolution #10: Volunteer

What does volunteering mean?

Volunteering means taking time out and getting involved in activities that help others. If you are an eco-volunteer that means you want to help protect the planet and you want to do activities or things that make our earth a better place to live for everyone.

A Junior Explorer always take the lead when it comes to doing something good for the planet!

Where can you volunteer?

Volunteer At Home

Help your parents to,

Plant your garden,

Look after pets,

Make new things out of old products,

Spread clothes on clothesline instead of using the dryer,

Clean graffiti on the wall!

…Or any other activity you can find around the house that can ease their chores and make you think of creative ways to go green!

When you volunteer to help around the house, you take the lead to make the correct choices for your entire family!

Volunteer In the Neighborhood

A neighbor might need help cleaning his garage or an old lady across the street could need help raking the leaves in her garden. These are good activities that you can do without them asking for your help. It’s also a wonderful way to find if you can come up with eco-friendly solutions to someone else problems – Old tire in the garage can be recycled to something useful, the raked leaves could be used for composting.

The more you volunteer to help in the neighborhood, the more you get the chance to show your Junior Explorer skills!

Volunteer At An Animal Shelter

Animal shelters are always in need of a volunteer or two to help them take care of all the animals that come there. It’s a good way to get close with an animal and understand how they sleep, eat or play!

Volunteer In A Conservation Organization

Conservation organizations like Nature Conservacncy or Defenders are actively involved in helping wildlife and making sure that they stay protected. You can make it a resolution this year that you’ll volunteer in any conservation organization and try and learn what they do. It’s one experience that’ll help you become a better Junior Explorer, just like Kia and Kyle!

My 2016 Resolution #4: Go On Eco-Holidays

What are eco-holidays?

Holidays are fun and they become double the fun when while you travel you also help in conserving the environment!

Eco-holidays means going to a place where you,

Appreciate nature.

Promote conservation.

Stay smartly to reduce your impact on the natural environment there. (Like using water and energy efficiently)

Help local communities to help them protect their natural environment.

Here are cool things you can do on an eco-holiday,

Walk on a Forest Canopy Walkaway and see if you can spot some of the animals you saw in Mission Amazon. A macaw, a capybara, or a jaguar!

Go on canoe or kayak trails to explore the natural beauty of the Everglades national Park through freshwater marsh, mangrove forests, and the open waters. See if you can find a basking crocodile somewhere!

Go camping in Serengeti as you watch millions of wildebeests and zebras take part in the Great Migration, just like in Mission Serengeti.

Snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef just like Kia and Kyle. See for yourself the biggest living ecosystem in the world!

My 2016 Resolution #3: Save Energy

What should we save energy?

Do you wonder sometimes why you’re always asked to “Turn off the light!” or “Close your refrigerator door!” It’s to save energy that’s used to run these devices. It’s easy to forget where energy comes from and as it’s always available when you need it, it’s also easy to forget how precious it is!

Most of the energy sources we depend on like coal and natural gas, are finite sources – that cannot be replaced. Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever!

Using too much energy is also bad for the planet because it causes pollution. By using less energy you can cut down the amount of gases polluting the air and that are leading to global warming.

How Can You Help?

Turn off the lights when not in use.

When you’re finished playing a mission online, turn off computer.

Help your mom dry the clothes outside on the clothesline instead of using the dryer and more energy.

Decide what you want, before you open the refrigerator door and don’t keep it open for too long.

Plan a sandwich night once a week, when your parents don’t have to use electricity or gas to cook!

My 2016 Resolution #1: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

 What does ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.’ mean?

The 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are 3 great ways you can protect the environment! Your environment is everything natural or man-made around you like air, water, soil, trees, animals, your house, school etc. You surely know that if our environment is healthy, it helps you to remain healthy and happy. But the waste we create is not keeping the environment healthy, therefore through the 3 Rs you can learn to,

Reduce your waste,

Reuse things again and again so that they don’t end up in the garbage dump quickly,

Recycle things to make something new and control the waste produced.

How Can You Help?

Practice the 3 Rs with everything everywhere! That’s the only way you can help protect the planet like a true Junior Explorer!

My 2016 Resolution #2: Save Water

What should we save water?

Even though the earth is covered with water, we can drink only about 1% of it. That’s a very very small quantity for so many people and all living beings! The rest is salt water (the kind you find in the ocean) or is permanently frozen and we can’t drink it, wash with it, or use it to water plants.

Therefore save drinkable water as much as you can.

How Can You Help?

As a Junior Explorer, it’s important that you know some smart tips to save water every day.

When brushing your teeth, turn off the tap. This can save at least 2-3 gallons of water!

When you shower for less than 5 minutes, it can save up to 1000 gallons of water in an year.

When you’re helping your parents water the garden, use a watering can rather than a hosepipe. This saves almost 265 gallons of water in an hour used by the pipe.
