Why Community Participation Is Essential For Water Conservation Organizations In India

India suffers from significant water-related problems for a nation of its size. According to a 2018 Niti Aayog estimate, by 2030, over half of India’s population of approximately 600 million people may experience acute water scarcity. Additionally, the nation has poor water quality. The amount of polluted water in India is close to 70%. The two main pollutants are nitrate and iron. India’s groundwater supply is gradually running out, which makes issues worse. Groundwater levels have been recorded as “critical” or “over-exploited” in 256 of 700 districts. Community involvement can be an excellent approach to directly involve people in the conservation effort and better prepare them to combat climate change along with ngo working for conservation of biodiversity.

In response, the concept of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) has emerged as a way to mitigate the effects of climate change. EbA integrates traditional ecological knowledge with scientific expertise to create strategies that protect and restore ecosystems while also providing benefits to human well-being. It focuses on the use of natural resources and ecosystems to reduce the vulnerability of communities to climate change. This approach is beneficial as it utilizes existing ecosystems to buffer against climate change, while also providing an array of other services such as water regulation, flood control, and food security. Through Ecosystem based Adaptation to climate change, communities are empowered to identify and implement approaches that are tailored to their own needs. ECOBARI – Upscaling Ecosystem Restoration Through Collective Action

The concept of ECOBARI emerged from a series of workshops organized by WOTR and TMG Research between 2019 and 2021, where stakeholders representing the central and state governments, research and academia, practitioner organizations, donors, community representatives, media and others discussed Ecosystem-based adaptation as a means to addressing climate change.

ECOBARI is the abbreviation for Ecosystems Based Adaptation for Resilient Incomes. In many Indian languages ‘Bari’ means ‘Home’. Since we are all dependent on one ecosystem or the other, for us ECOBARI also represents ‘Ecological Home’. We present the Vision, Mission and Roadmap of the initiative.

Only One earth – Climate Change Adaptation with Ecosystem based Adaptation

A holistic adaptation strategy, Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) is the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services as part of an overall adaptation strategy to help people adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. A people-centric concept, it recognises the essentiality of a healthy ecosystem for communities to be resilient in the face of the changing climate. For a farmer, this could mean the introduction of heat-resistant crop varieties, for a coastal community safeguarding of mangroves, and for drought areas recharging of groundwater through ponds and forest regeneration.

Turning to nature to retain topsoil cover, cool down rising temperatures and, tackle floods and drought, the idea is simple. Equip and fortify the existing ecosystem to take on the vagaries of climate-induced changes, head-on. This ecosystem and human-centric approach ensure that neither of the two  is neglected and both are benefited, increasing resilience as well as reducing vulnerability to climate change.

How does the Ecosystem-based Adaptation approach work?

It focuses on restoring, maintaining and improving ecosystems so they are resilient to climate change. EbA looks beyond the role of ecosystems as being providers of fixed natural resources and instead sees them as a network of interconnected beings that not only generate products such as food but also provide regulating services that affect climate and water cycles, cultural services that provide educational and community benefits and supporting services such as nutrient cycling. For example, in our watershed development projects we not only look at conserving soil and water but also pay attention to the needs of humans, flora and fauna while promoting local biodiversity and maintaining a People’s Biodiversity register.

We understand the gravity of the climate crisis in India. We also know with our proven research that if practised more widely, the Ecosystem-based Adaptation response to climate will help India manage land degradation, conserve and improve ecosystems and progress towards reducing its carbon footprint in the world.

Benefits of embedding Biodiversity in EbA

While literature about the role of Biodiversity in adaptation initiatives is insufficient, the success achieved by embedding Biodiversity in EbA is felt at multiple levels. This is mainly by virtue of its comprehensiveness, proactiveness, and climate resilience, which influences landscape-level factors and has significant socio-economic implications. Moreover, the broad base and variety, from the soil microbes to the higher-order organisms across multiple levels, i.e., genetic, species and ecosystem, present a significant vantage point to tackle climatic issues and offer livelihood benefits. For instance, the plethora of Ecosystem Based Adaptation goods and services obtained through better integration of Biodiversity in EBA can be bundled and strengthened by sustainable financing to enhance rural income.

Positive socio-economic conditions, in turn, are known to influence the adaptive capacity of species, ecosystems and the human community. This is especially pertinent for the vulnerable and developing geographies of the world, which remain rich in terms of natural capital yet disadvantaged on multiple fronts.  For instance, Sub-Saharan Africa, one of the most species-rich regions in the world, is also one of the poorest and runs a risk of losing close to 10% of its real GDP to the collapse of ecosystem services. This elucidates a causal nexus between socio-economic conditions and adaptive capacities, effected by the far-reaching role of Biodiversity. Based on these sophisticated linkages, reasonable correlations can be made about the ability of Biodiversity to both leverage and reinforce the natural capacity of ecosystems to support human adaptation and planetary well-being.
