just learned about canebrakes and the fact that they have primarily been replaced with agriculture and god fucking dammit it is hard, seeing the shifted baseline of growing up in a landscape permanently and irrevocably altered by the ecological devastation of the 19th and 20th centuries, especially across the american west. the amtrak station under a highway overpass is located on what is likely garbage infill that destroyed the coastline of the san fransisco bay. there are only 2/3 the birds on this continent that there were when my mother was a child. everything keeps getting quieter, and i do not know what to do about it
