What is the difference between an oil finish and a polyurethane finish on a bamboo floor?
If you’re already set on choosing bamboo as your flooring option, one of the main things to consider after color is the finish you want. The two main differences between finishes are the aesthetic and the care and maintenance.
Aesthetically
The natural feel and the matte look of the oil finish are definitely more aesthetically pleasing from a design standpoint. Anytime you can get extra warmth from your flooring by being able to feel the actual bamboo through the finish is a plus. The Polyurethane is what gives the bamboo sheen and it feels slick when you walk on it.
Care and Maintenance
The Polyurethane takes a quick bona Swiffer job to keep it clean and looking nice. The oil finish on the other hand takes a little more effort to keep up. It is recommended to oil the floor annually depending on traffic to protect it and you have to be a lot more careful. If you leave liquid on your floor for too long, it could leave a permanent stain.
When making your final decision, you will have to choose which is more important to you; The design, or the long term care and maintenance?
If you have a large family with lots of children and pets, I would recommend the poly finish. If you have less traffic in your house and like the look of a floor that will patina with the character of your home, the oil finish is the best option!
