How to Read Fashion Eco-Labels (and Spot Greenwashing)

Not all “green” fashion is truly sustainable. Eco-labels can help—but only if you know how to read them. Brands often use buzzwords like “organic,” “eco,” or “conscious” to signal sustainability, but these claims mean little without credible third-party certifications.

Start by looking for verified labels. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certifies that fibers are organic and processed without toxic chemicals. OEKO-TEX ensures textiles are tested for harmful substances. Fair Trade and B Corp indicate ethical labor and transparent business practices. These certifications require compliance with strict standards and regular audits.

Be cautious of vague terms like “eco-friendly” or “natural.” Without evidence or certification, such labels may be greenwashing—marketing designed to make products look sustainable without real accountability. Also, check the scope: a T-shirt might be “made with organic cotton,” but if it’s only 10% organic and dyed in a polluting process, the impact is minimal.

Dig deeper on the brand’s website. Do they disclose their supply chain, labor conditions, and full fiber content? Transparency is a good sign. Silence or fluff is not.

Eco-labels are tools, not guarantees. Learn the trusted ones and question the rest. That’s how you protect both your wardrobe and the planet.
