The Ford Ecosport to arrive in mid-June
All these days we had been putting up posts on cars which didn’t necessarily matter to most of us. Yeah, we do agree that we love to hear stuff about Lambos, Ferrari, McLarens and Porsches. But in the real world, these bad boys aren’t what we get to drive or what we get to buy. So let’s talk about a car which many of us (including yours truly) has been interested in for quite a long while – the Ford Ecosport. The news of the compact SUV’s launch has been doing the rounds for almost a year by now and since we got to see it in the flesh at the 2012 Delhi Auto Show we couldn’t be patient enough to get our hands on it.
But for some reason, Ford kept delaying the launch and postponing it till…well…eternity. The worst part was that we never got a clear answer from the manufacturer on when they planned to launch it after all. The dealers were in the dark, the automotive media in general had only rumors to clinch on to and every other day we’ll be treated to the news of the SUV being launched in some other part of the world. Correction, the worst part was that we actually got to see a dozen of these cars (without camouflage) in different parts of the country, undergoing testing.
Now Ford has officially revealed its launch plans along with the announcement of the customer experience drive, named Ecosport Urban Discoveries. Mr Sriram Padmanabhan, Vice President, Marketing, Ford India didn’t go into the details as much as we would have wanted. But he revealed that dealers will be accepting bookings after the consumer experience drive concludes by the end of May. That places the first delivery dates to be somewhere in the middle of June. The pre-launch activity will also involve the Ecosport being showcased in 12 cities in the country.
The Ecosport range will consist of four variants and three engine options. Along with the a 1.5 litre diesel and the petrol unit borrowed from the Fiesta, a new 1-litre Ecoboost turbocharged petrol that develops about 122bhp will also be offered. The 1.5 petrol will have the option of an automatic gearbox while the entire range will be offered with 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. Ford is counting on the sub-4 metre length and 1.5 litre engines so that the Ecosport won’t come in the SUV tax bracket. This is highly crucial for them as well as the buyers. Ford aims the car to be placed in Rs. 7-9lakh range which will literally be the deal of the year.
Keeping our fingers crossed for that to work out.
