KYVL Research Portal - DYMOMimio - Music Notation Training - Cloud Computing - Troubleshoot Wireless Network Connections - Web Tools 4 Educators
Welcome to the 6th Blog for September 2011 (the 38th this year); An extra find today-ooops I didn’t notice so a bonus for you all.
Today’s 6 Finds (234 posted this year) include…
1: The KYVL Research Portal - How to do research
One of the challenges that every learner faces, at one time or another, is focused and efficient research.
Kentucky Virtual Library have put together an interactive map of the research process. The map walks learners through the research process from start to finish with every step along the way.
One of the things about this map that librarians will like is that it is not focused solely on web research.
How To Do Research includes a good section about using library catalogues, books, and magazines.
The Kentucky Virtual Library's How To Do Research could be a good resource for younger learners (Family Learning) or a template for learning providers to produce similar resources for their learners. Not every step along the way is explained in depth so practitioners will have to help learners actually perform some of the tasks along the way.

If you're a music teacher looking for a simple reading practice activity, Music Notation Training might be for you.
It's a simple website on which learners can practice recognizing music notes. The offers practice for both bass and treble clefs.
• type the letters of the notes you see displayed before you.
• each time a letter is typed learners can instantly see if they were right or wrong.
Note: There are a few progressions through the site so that learners don't have the same sequence of notes all the time.
Try it out at http://notationtraining.com/ .
4: Cloud Computing: The Layperson's Guide to Distributed Networks
There's a lot of buzz around "cloud computing" these days, but what exactly is it? Who are the major players involved, and how can it benefit learners and Learning Providers?
This post by Christina Warren at Mashable will help answer these questions.
Access the guide at http://mashable.com/2011/08/25/cloud-computing-guide/.
5: Troubleshoot Wireless Network Connection Problems by Yourself | Windows 7 Tutorials
“You can read & learn our step by step diagram for how to troubleshoot a wireless connection by yourself. If it is hard to remember, you can even print it and have it available when needed.”
Some smaller Learning Providers, without IT Support, will at times experience Wi-Fi network problems.
The 7Tutorials tutorial website provides a set of handy flowcharts to help walk users through their wireless networking problems; guiding them towards Wi-Fi solutions. The charts cover everything from the basics (is the router on?) to the more complex (does your device support the wireless mode in use by the router?).
The flowcharts cover just about every common wireless configuration issue Learning Providers may run into.
Sort those problems by visiting http://7tutorials.com/troubleshoot-wireless-network-connection-problems-yourself.
