The first time I heard the Harlan Leonard Rockets was on a hot summer afternoon at the local pool and golf club I frequented as a teenager. I had my radio tuned to WKCR, and the station was playing a slew of this Kansas City band’s great Bluebird 78s. Rarely found re-issued even in anthologies, the band had fine soloists and such arranging talents as Tadd Dameron and Eddie Durham, as JazzWax aptly shows.
