All Darryl ever wanted was to be given a chance. "After all," he used to say. "Edward Mannock is blind as a bat in one eye. Ja? Und look at his impressive kill ratio. Ja?" Perhaps his detractors were correct - Darryl's contribution to the German war effort were negligible. Yet he still outlived his more famous cousin by several years, eventually dying of a ruptured spleen after an unfortunate run-in with Smith Wigglesworth in 1924 whilst holidaying in the Yorkshire moors.
