the sun is swallowed by storm clouds, new york a dull grey, and he stands atop the steps of his sister’s apartment. the first set of knocks are gentle and unsure but he finds the courage to try again, with urgency. all he has with him is a backpack stuffed with his laptop, some warm clothes for the nearing winter, and music that makes him want to fall in love.
not a single word is uttered as the door cracks open, the boy tumbling into a brief silence because it’s a long-shot; hal may be family, but it’s been a part-time gig. ‘ hey. i know we grew up in different worlds, i know we’re not that close, but… i was wondering if it’d be cool if i stayed here. i was wondering if you wanted a brother. ‘

a mutant’s unique touch has empowered hal and they’ve made their own danger room in the woods. leaves are turning autumn-brown, the air is cold, but jamie is undeniably warm as she takes her new tricks for a spin. she’s glowing, no longer the lone human amongst the gifted. ‘ how does it feel ? being like me. ’

‘ once a year, we celebrate the day the walls were built. ’ in the lab, kaidan reaches inside his backpack. ‘ everyone looks forward to it. it’s a way to forget about how bad things are, i guess. ’ eden has transformed tonight, its residents raising their glasses with warm smiles, yet she remains in isolation. he slowly pushes a faded dress that’s seen better days into her arms, the two of them alone in this dreary, clinical room. no place for someone like her. she’s beautiful - the kind of beautiful you wouldn’t think you’d find at the end of the world. ‘ i just… didn’t want you to miss the ball. ’
will juliet's powers work if she speaks in another language? what if she said what she did to the girl, but in a different language, will others still get hurt?
juliet’s power won’t work if she speaks in another language, no. from what xavier has observed, her powers are heavily linked to her emotions, and she needs to feel something in order for the hex to be cast. if she were to speak in a language she didn’t fully understand (or wasn’t the most comfortable with), the power behind her words wouldn’t hit in the right way.
nate had begun to notice the signs of living people being in the area, the way that the buildings had been picked clean, the way that there were dead muertos scattered all around the area and yet the walking muertos were few and far between. there were other signs as well, planks of wood used to walk between buildings, fresh footprints left behind in dirt or dust. part of him had wanted to leave, the living after all could be far more dangerous than the dead ever could be and he had enough experience with bad people to last him another lifetime. but he hadn’t left, he couldn’t. he had been alone for a long time and it had been so long since he had seen someone living, what if they were good? what if there was a community nearby?
so he had scouted the area out, followed the tracks, searched for more signs of life and slowly but surely he had begun to catch up with whoever was near until he spotted them -- a small group, armed and wearing protective gear. perhaps scouts or a patrol . . . and nate had waited, waited until one of them got far enough away from the others that he could sneak up on them. nate moved quickly and smoothly with trained ease, grasping a hold of the man in front of him and dragging him into a covered alley where he shoved the barrel of his rifle into his face. “ don’t. ” as far as first impressions went it likely wasn’t the best, but nate had no interest in signing up with a bunch of killers if he could help it. the guy was tall -- well built and clean enough, which meant that there was definitely a place that they were hauled up in that had food, maybe even running water.
nate waited for several short seconds just to make sure that he wasn’t about to get clocked in the face or that the man wasn’t going to yell for his team, nate figured he only had a couple of minutes before his team realized he was missing so he wanted to get this done quickly. “ i’d apologize but the last group i met worshiped muertos, ” nate said, he took a step back and lowered his rifle, “ kinda made me paranoid. ” // @edenhymns ♡’d for starter & gets one for aiden

“ would you stop ?! ” that was it. erik laughed, a short sound but laughter nevertheless, perhaps even the first time since it was a genuine sound and not a half choked chuckle or a huffed sound of indifferent humor, but laughter. actual and real and fully formed even as he hurled his water canister at miles in a half hearted attempt to stop any further antics from piling up. but if felt good. to laugh. it even felt good to have miles sprouting terrible pick up lines at him, as stupid as it sounded, it felt good. “ jesus christ, you’re like a cheesy rom-com, knock it off. ”

“ i swear to god . . . ” the exclamation was little more than a low whisper, words tangled with barely suppressed amusement as a reluctant grin curled at the corners of his lips despite his best efforts to mask it behind a feigned expression of annoyance that erik also knew that miles would be able to see right through and take only as encouragement. whatever had possessed miles to start dropping corny pick up lines on him was evidently still going strong and erik shook his head as he raised his brows at the man in his own amused disbelief. “ do these actually work ? like, ever? ”
