We were heading off somewhere else on a very wet start to the afternoon a very open place and because it was so wet we abandoned it and headed to Lymington where there were Little Terns one I needed for my year list, and I did see them pretty quickly. The brief spell at Lymington was dominated however by another seasonal year tick for me the Linnet with some wonderful views of some really colourful ones. To those who don’t know Lymington and Pennington are the same reserve part of Keyhaven-Lymington but we park at different places to go to them as its a long walk between them and Keyhaven. We’d also heard that the Stilt Sandpiper was on Pennington’s Fishtail Lagoon so we thought as the rain had stopped we might as well try and see it.
We got there and saw lots of people looking over the lagoon whilst I saw one of my favourite birds the Sedge Warbler for the first time this year, another happy year tick. It was what would follow though that made this one of my greatest ever birdwatching days as I managed to see the Stilt Sandpiper at a distance. Its a funny bird as its so small but appears tall hence the same but it really is a cracker of a bird. Its amazing to think 24 hours ago I’d never heard of it yet now I’ve seen one. It was my 236th bird ever and my 2nd new bird this year which also makes me happy. But as if this wasn’t enough as we were looking for further views of the Stilt Sandpiper a Garganey flew in! This is a bird I’d only seen once before and I was really excited by it the first time having wanted to see one for a while so I was further thrilled by my 5th year tick of the day.
It wasn’t over there though as when we walked beside the sea we noticed some Eiders out to sea. This included the view I got in the 4th picture in this photoset which was the closest view I’ve ever got of a male Eider and there were about 6 or 7 out there which is great to see so many of a beautiful bird. This alone would have stole the visit in normal circumstances but with what else I’d seen it was amazing!
On the way back to the car I managed to get a 7th year tick of the day in the form of a Reed Warbler. This took my year list to 150 with this milestone being the icing on the cake. I certainly added some more absolute gems and highlights to my year list today and only 1 of my past year lists was ahead of where I am at this stage of the year in terms of numbers and that was my record year list. I just found myself thinking today my birding brilliance of 2016 continues and its been such a good year already. I always think when you get to 150 you can almost sit back and not care what you finish with but it shows just how many amazing things I’ve seen this year that even with this number I still have quite common birds I’m yet to see. Overall today these birds put a big smile on my face and what with my football team winning the FA Cup yesterday this will go down as one of the greatest weekends of my life!
