The Edinburgh Vaults are series of tunnels completed in 1788. Businesses above ground used the vaults for storage for about 30 years, but they eventually moved out due to deteriorating conditions. The poor then took up the tunnels as their living spaces. By 1820, it’s believed that they too had almost entirely moved out. Murders were very common in the vaults, with many believing that the infamous body snatchers Burke and Hare would hunt for victims to sell to the University for study. There are many ghosts that people encounter regularly, including a female entity who attacks pregnant women, a little boy called Jack, and a rather malevolent spirit, dubbed ‘Mr. Boots by the guides.

So I've been in the Edinburgh Underground Vaults, one of the worlds most haunted spots. I am a theatre kid, in my theatre experience I've been told numerous ghost stories and experienced paranormal things in said haunted places. I was in the vaults and I saw the kindly Cobbler that resides down there. He is a warm old man, and likes having visitors to his vault. There are a few friendly spirits down in the vaults, a little boy who likes to hold your hand and throw some rocks, trying to get you to play with him. And the cobbler, who just likes company. But there is one ghost down there that doesn't like visitors. He is called Mr. Boots or The Watcher because he mostly watches unless you disrespect the seriousness of what you are doing. He is known to wear a long blue coat and have heavy heavy black boots that he drags across the floor or stomps around. There are many encounters with him, he is almost always saying the two words "Get Out." One lady, who was making light of the subject of the ghostly underground, began to hear "get out" whispered into her right ear, the back of her neck chilled and the feeling of nails scratching along her neck. She told the guide she needed to leave the vaults but the guide wasn't too worked up about this small incident, but the whispers got louder until he was screaming at her as she ran to the door, the scratching and the yelling only stopping once she was above ground. It is said in a specific room, known as The Watchers Room, Mr. Boots murdered a prostitute. When in said room, when a guide leads people into it, the people always crowd to one corner of the room. I have been in this room and to my devastation I was on the outside of the group in his room, near to where they found her body. I did not see Mr. Boots, he did not attack me, but I did feel cold, cold vulnerable and unable to move from where I was standing until my friend came and took my arm. It wasn't a normal chill of fear, it was as if someone were blowing on my neck, softly, and while breath should be warm when blown it was cold, unearthly cold. Mr. Boots was probably angry, people were using bright shining flashlights to take pictures and try and see him. He was angry. Luckily we moved from there soon, back to the safe room with the cobbler, a known "protector" from Mr. Boots. We were down there for 30 minutes not very long to experience anything, yet I saw the kind old cobbler smile and felt the freezing breath of Mr. Boots on my neck as I stood in his room, listening to his story he did NOT want others to know about or visit. @sixpenceee you may enjoy this experience of mine!
