Edith Spurlock Sampson (1901-1979) was the first Black American female judge by-election, a diplomat, and a civil rights advocate. She is known for being the first Black American to officially represent the United States at the United Nations, appointed in 1950. She was also the first Black American U.S. delegate to NATO.
