JUST IN: Pres. Obama on the death of Edith Windsor: "I had the privilege to speak with Edie a few days ago, and to tell her one more time what a difference she made to this country we love." http://nbcnews.to/2jkCVep

Rest in POWER Edith
Dear Edie Thank you for fighting for us, for standing up in the face of injustice. You have forever changed our world, we will miss you. As President Barack Obama said of her, “It was a victory for families, and for the principle that all of us should be treated equally, regardless of who we are or who we love,”. And plus you flirted with me and I loved every minute of it. #EdithWindsor
Thank you for everything you did, Edith Windsor! You were a courageous woman who gave me and so many others the right to marry a man in the United States whenever that time comes. You were a fighter for freedom, justice, and equality! You were so persistent and made a difference for he LGBTQ community and for the United States. We will always remember you ❤️💛💚💙💜🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 #edithwindsor #lgbtq #samesexmarriage
“In 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right — a landmark decision that would not have been possible without Edith Windsor. After a 40-year engagement, Windsor married Thea Spyer in Canada in 2007. Spyer passed away just two years later, leaving everything to her wife. Because the US did not recognize their same-sex marriage, Windsor was asked to pay taxes on Spyer’s estate far beyond what a heterosexual spouse would be required to pay on the estate of their deceased spouse. Windsor took her case to court and in 2013, the Supreme Court ruled in her favor. Two years later, the court expanded on that ruling in another case that led to federal recognition of same-sex marriages.” • Edith Windsor (1929-2017) • • • #edithwindsor #activist #lesbian #lgbtrights #pride #pridemonth #lgbtq #reworkedphoto #illustrationonphotos #illustrationonphotography #illustrationoncelebraties #reworkedphoto #wannabeportrait #brownieillustration (em USA) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQfwD56M8Lp/?utm_medium=tumblr
