What Makes an “EDM Hit”?
Electronic Dance Music is something many of us love to hate. We hear a song on the radio and instantly understand why it is so popular. EDM songs are infectious these days – and many of them take trace elements of hip-hop and pop music in order to propel them to the top of the charts. One might even think that these songs were designed this way, and there is some truth to that. While there is no formula that dictates whether or not a song will be great, there are certainly steps that can give it an advantage over others. Radio stations are paid to play songs, so top producers have the means of getting their music heard. The euphoric idea that the cream rises to the top is somewhat false here, since there are many great songs by unknown producers that won’t be heard. The downside of EDM is that a winning formula can be copied and sometimes stolen, since the instruments used to create it are by no means unique. Study the top paid DJs out there and you will begin to understand how hits are created and sustained for radio play. The question is: Is that how you want to succeed? http://www.crossfadr.com/2014/05/30/what-makes-an-edm-hit-defining-dance-music-success-in-2014/
