Transparent amber ruby. After a momentary austere barnyard, big smoky nose crammed with decadent berry, dank grass composting, and brown butter--savory rich and sea-side brisk--that amazing pinot ability to be dark and brooding while co-independently cool breezy. So wonderfully warm and cozy though... something I am used to seeing in SLH but only in the way more expensive echelons of Edna Valley Pinot. This is I guess kosher wine--produced by Herzog, but it doesn't really SAY it on it anywhere and only carries the wording NON-MESHUVAL, which I googled, and either means it was not boiled or that it was kosher right up until the moment I--gentile I am--poured it. My grasp of all things orthodox is considerably sketchy. I just like finding great wines and if I can dispel a few stereotypes along the way, so be it. Here, we are again laying out a kosher wine which is on par with some of the finest examples of the variety in the state. In the mouth, thin buttery almond entry immediately changes its mind and decides full-blown black-cherry extravaganza will be its M.O. Briary to a fault with tinges of bitter encroaching the sides of the tongue, it still manages some of the most ridiculous ripe fruit I have seen in Edna Valley. But not TOO RIPE, thank Dog! There is a streamlined thin-ness to the middle palate, which--despite a generous poke of acid--manages pure pinot all the way, never slutty or extravagant, focused on its crisp fruity bitterness. I'm guessing this is hi-13's, and while there is no heat, the pure perfect ripeness says it all. The chivalrous crunch of tannin leaves a memory etched in sweet nectar. 2016 EAGLE'S LANDING #PinotNoir #EdnaValley San Luis Obispo Co. Dunites knockin another one outa the park with this sans soufre Syrah from, well... you can read. Sharp briar rasp on a rainy steel platform. Fruit so bright and fresh, sharp and ridiculously vibrant. This is a wine for people who like acid and tannin and who like their fruit edgy and green bit still voluminous. Sure, there's a firm ripeness to it--but only in the spirit it colors the background with. Gorgeous and perfumed, conflictingly ripe and exhaustingly structured, I would blind this so hard in a young Cornas tasting or equally young (and expensive) côtie-rôtie gathering. If you can find this, I highly recommend it. Not sure the longevity of it, but it is nothing short of stunning right meow. 2018 @dunites #syrah #sansoufre #spanishsprings #ednavalley #sanluisobispo 13.5 @puffersofpismo #pismobeach (at Puffers of Pismo) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4EBV6AJGhG/?igshid=b2zjsmz0n5r9
A lot of Paso Robles Rhone wine is sourced from Slide Hill in Edna Valley or even Santa Barbara, but here's one getting pulled off of one of the coolest climate vineyard sites in California, Spanish Springs, just outside of Pismo Beach. This is a relatively young vineyard planted since I moved to this area but it has quickly achieved acclaim probably most importantly from Raj Parr's Evening Land project launching there. The point of all of this is of course how refreshing it is to see a region typically projecting a very warm weather approach to Rhone varieties embracing a chilly, foggy coastal hillside way out of town for, not pinot, not their albarino or chard, but their actual Syrah--the supposed backbone of Paso Robles. Deep ruby, a ridiculously abrupt edge and quite staining. Big dried flower and Kalamata try their best to unseat the massive black cherry and green, briary spice, volatile and--at certain points of the swirl--obfuscating everything in their earthy glow. In the mouth, beautiful, clean, calm Syrah. Definitely going for concentration, this is the blackest, thickest--and probably highest alcohol--of anything I have had from Spanish Springs. I'm guessing it is well north of 14. This one is definitely not going for the young bright inexpensive in-your-face Northern Rhone style and is instead queuing up Hermitage and Cornas for style-points: dark brooding sweet goodness on the immediate surface and wet rope, leather, a brilliant lemon bite and chewed cigar clawing to get out directly beneath. And then of course VERY healthy tannins, which never overpower the relentless cherry. This is pretty serious Syrah. And VERY nicely done. 2015 @percasowines #syrah #spanishsprings #ednavalley #slowine 14.4 #pixel #libbeyglass (at Per Caso) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3LcPXmnfGn/?igshid=k8y083o13y0b
Decadent Slide Hill goodness, an absolute perfection in Syrah representation from Edna Valley in SLOco. This is across the street from Alban at the far southern end of Edna Valley, where the fog stacks up late into the morning and far into October. A true cool-climate designation with a vast spectrum of winemakers sourcing: from cool and clean early pickers to full round flabby also-rans of Paso bling-bros. Fruit on 11, dusty peach and honey drizzles over a package rife with tannin and a mild sort of briar. Absolute sex in a bottle and I'm so glad I have several more of these for the long run. 2011 @qupewines #syrah 'Sonnies' Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard #slidehill #ednavalley #sanluisobispo 13-5 #pixel (at Ocean Grill Avila Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1QOddgntoL/?igshid=1mpxoa11n7ha0
