I had this fantasy-esque Edo period TsubaMaria AU idea floating around for a while now (inspired by an art by Coaco).
The land is being plagued by a particular youkai (called Noise for the sound it makes) that wander streets at night and prey on unsuspecting humans. Only certain weapons can fight them.
Tsubasa belongs to an important samurai family. She and her best friend Kanade (who wields a naginata) fought together in the Sengoku era to establish the Tokugawa Shogunate. Kanade died in a battle where her family had her and others sacrificed as bait, so afterwards Tsubasa gave up fighting under the authority of big warrior clans and ran away from her family and home.
Tsubasa took with her the sacred sword of her family (Ame no Habakiri) that has been passed down through generations. Ame no Habakiri has special properties such as never tarnishing, never getting dull, being indestructible, and being sharper under the moon.
A few years later, Tsubasa is still grief-stricken over Kanade and has a “I live only for myself attitude”. She has to defend herself from robbers and the like, and occasionally does mercenary work for money (usually as a temporary hired guard for noblemen). Rumors have spread about her being a fierce warrior. They call her the Azure Flash (named after how fast she draws her sword and the color of the its arc as it glints in the moonlight).
Maria is among the nobility in the imperial court. One night her family is on the road and Tsubasa is one of the hired guards accompanying them. Suddenly they’re attacked by the Noise. The other guards’ weapons don’t work on the Noise and almost everyone dies. Luckily the Ame no Habakiri does work on the Noise, and Tsubasa saves Maria.
Maria, with no else left, hires Tsubasa as her personal guard permanently (though it takes some convincing). The Noise are starting to appear in more places around the country. Tsubasa and Maria uncover the mystery of why the Noise are appearing and stop them. Maria helps Tsubasa move on from her grief and teaches her to be altruistic and kind and they fall in love along the way.
A part of the new shogunate is trying to get rid of the imperial court because they think they’re basically useless, so they found a gateway to the underworld and are sending the Noise after the noblemen. Tsubasa’s family is highly involved and to stop them Tsubasa eventually has to confront her family again.
