This kingdom is a real life #wakanda. Technologies like maps of the walls of Benin (originally known as Iya) , history preserved by artwork and spirituality that has spread as far as #Brazil via the transatlantic slave trade... Last major southern kingdom to fight back against the British colonials before they were slaughtered by the punitive expedition of the British in 1897. They simply rebelled against British trade... that was their crime... Our true cultures last stand before defeat materializes in colonialism... A kingdom that had diplomatic relations with the Portuguese... built expansive earthworks... still the top of the hierarchy of Yoruba monarchs ... the Obas.... the cultural bridge and glue between the Yoruba and Igbo tribes of Nigeria. I find it no surprise that the country of Nigeria amalgamated only 17 years from the fall of Benin... there was no way to take control of southern Nigeria without taking out the Kingdom of Benin... the cultural damage of the punitive expedition to the region and eventually Nigeria has been reverberating ever since... Sad that Nigerians do not know how the British through into perpetual chaos changed the natural balance of the people of southern Nigeria forever... if we don't know then we haven't even thought of how best to repair the damage... It has no historical relation to the modern nation-state of Benin, which was historically known as Dahomey from the 17th century until 1975. The Kingdom of Benin's capital was Edo, now known as Benin City in Edo state, Nigeria. #Benin #benincity #nigeria #southernnigeria #WestAfrica #edo #edopeople #africans #nigerians #beninartifacts #africa #centralafrica #blackhistory (at Benin Empire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS5PZSEHeia/?utm_medium=tumblr
