i really like the idea of ed always having an innocent crush on riza, because really who doesn't.......!! but it's not even something he acknowledges. until years later post canon ed comes back all grown up and realizes that puppy crush never truly went away and now that he stands "as equals" to riza it gives him a new perspective, as the image he had of riza was of someone unreachable, but now he realizes she's human just like him

also i'm trash and really like the trope of "younger person earnestly pursues older person". there's something so sexy about being like, 'you knew me when i was a dumb little guy but i can sweep you off your feet now :J'. ed wants riza to acknowledge he's a real adult now(which doesn't seem to get through riza unfortunately), and riza is not used to being the center of someone's attention like that and is reluctant, but eventually gives in to his enthusiasm because it's really cute how hard he's trying to impress her
