1. 🚀👩‍🚀 One of the most “out of this world” stories (😉) of the past month was the Artemis II launch, marking the historic crewed test flight around the moon!

2. 📚 Chicago turned all public school IDs into library cards to boost student access!

The Chicago Public Library and Chicago Public Schools expanded The 81 Club, a program that allowed school ID cards to double as library cards, removing the need for additional steps and documentation to gain library system access. The initiative aims to promote resources for students facing the greatest education barriers like foster youth, unhoused students, and undocumented students. Hopes are that the program will continue the expansion of library resource access seen in The 81 Club’s original pilot program — the pilot, which launched in 2022, led to a 63 % increase in library access among economically disadvantaged students and an over 80% increase among English language learners!

The “30x30 goal” calls on governments across the world to conserve 30% of Earth’s land and seas by 2030. While there is still work to go in conserving and protecting these areas, progress can be still seen both in policies like the High Seas Treaty and in the numbers of marine conservation — in 2024, only 8.6% of the oceans had been protected compared to today's 10%!

4. 🏳️‍⚧️ A landmark case in Romania marks a victory for trans Europeans!

The case concerned a Romanian citizen who transitioned in another European Union country, and the Romanian government declined to recognize his gender identity citing documentation disparity — in the UK, he was recognized as a man, and in Romania, as a “woman.” The ruling means that all EU member states are obligated to recognize the identity documents of transgender individuals who earned legal gender recognition in another EU state, serving as a victory for trans people not just in Romania but across the EU!

5. 🐋 Humpback whales are forming super-groups, signaling recovery for the species!

Sightings of these super-groups, defined as groups of 20 or more whales within five body-lengths of their nearest neighbor, have become increasingly common — in just off South Africa’s west coast, sightings have increased from 10 to an incredible 65 per year. While experts are still investigating the cause of the surge, the super-groups represent a victory for whale conservation efforts over the past few decades!

ProLiteracy: Nationwide network that provides training, learning materials, supplies, and monetary support to various adult literacy initiatives across the nation. Part of the reason Trump won is because most American adults are barely literate.

Hawaii Literacy: A child AND adult literacy initiative in Hawaii. They provide tutoring, homework help, independent learning materials, and run a bookmobile. 1 in 6 Hawaiian adults struggle to read comprehensively, and Trump's disgusting negligence during the early days of the pandemic disproportionately effected the Hawaiian peoples.

American Indian College Fund: Only 16% of Native Americans hold 4 year college degrees, compared to 36% of white Americans. AICF provides funds for tuition at tribal colleges or accredited non profit universities, internet access, food security, and other necessities. As higher education gets more and more and more expensive, the education gap WILL increase and it WILL increase the systemic disenfranchisement of Native Americans.

Asian Pacific Islander American Scholars: A scholarship fund for Asian and Pacific Islander. They also provide additional emergency funds for scholarship recipients facing unexpected hardships during their education, and a career development fund for students needing extra help during internships and other development opportunities. Post-COVID anti-Asian racism and the elimination of "affirmative action" is a direct threat to APIA education equality.

Urgent Action Fund: A source of monetary support to trans and feminist activists and their movements across the globe. Some of these are grants for organizations, and others are smaller, emergency grants for unique or unexpected situations. Feminist organizations are often severely underfunded and UFA provides grants to a wide variety of causes. Trump has made the world less safe for women and queer people, and the rest of us need to step up.

Native American Rights Fund: A legal/litigation organization focused on upholding tribal sovereignty and holding government entities responsible for broken treaties, protecting resources on tribal lands, and advancing/securing civil rights for Natives. Trump's administration will, if they have their way, destroy every single step of progress that has been made towards indigenous sovereignty.

Migrant Clinicians Network: A network of healthcare providers who work with migrant populations. They assist with disaster preparedness, coordinate a continuity of care, and provide training for clinicians hoping to become more competent with migrant populations. Trump's gestapo are actively hunting immigrants for sport, they need every cent they can get.

Indigenous Women Rising: A mutual aid organization that runs an abortion fund (for medical costs, transportation to a clinic, etc), a midwifery fund (for safe, culturally sensitive labor and delivery care), and a menstrual/menopause hygiene product fund (pads, tampons, cups, hormone treatments, etc). These funds are open to indigenous peoples of all genders. As abortion rights continue to be shredded to ribbons, funds like these will become more and more essential.

Forgotten Harvest: A large-scale food distribution network with multiple community-level agency partners. A 10 dollar donation translates to 70 dollars worth of groceries, and they distribute roughly 144k pounds of food per week. Trump's administration is deliberately attempting to starve poor people to death and with SNAP now virtually worthless, food banks are DROWNING under increased demands.

North Texas Food Bank: Similar to Forgotten Harvest, but located in North Texas. They cover 12 counties and 9,200 square miles. In their covered areas, they distribute food to food banks, run senior and child nutrition programs, and support community garden initiatives. 744k North Texans are food insecure, and contrary to popular tumblr belief, Texans ARE people.

Muslim Aid USA aka MAUSA: A faith-based Muslim charity with global impact. MAUSA provides emergency aid in disaster areas, increases clean water access and food security, repairs damaged homes, sponsors the basic needs of orphans, and builds schools. The elimination in USAID was cheered by many as a blow to imperialism, but that does not change the reality that that loss of funding killed people. We must try to close the gap.

American Immigration Council: AIC provides emergency litigation help for those facing ICE detention and those seeking asylum based on a queer identity, publish research data that dispels common myths about immigration, legal resources for immigration attorneys, and collaborate with state and local leaders to push pro-immigrant agendas. This will get worse before it gets better, and those detention camps will not empty until we empty them.

UNIDOS US: A Latin American empowerment organization working to remove barriers to Latin American prosperity. Projects include voter registration and education on electoral issues, healthcare access, housing equality, job training and career readiness, and immigration rights. Only 30% of Latin American adults are fully vaccinated, 70% of Latin American college students are the first in their family to attend, Latin Americans are nearly twice as likely as Whites to die at the hands of the police.

our principal announced we're doing a book study this semester

the book: "The Teacher's Black Students' Needs" by Dr. Zachary Robbins

initial reaction in the staff room: groans, eye rolls, "not another diversity training"

two chapters in: silence, uncomfortable shifting, actual reflection

here's what's happening

we're a suburban school that's gotten more diverse over the last decade

our teaching staff? still 90% white

our discipline data? shows clear disparities by race

our advanced classes? still mostly white students

we all KNEW this. we just weren't talking about it.

why this book is different

dr. robbins doesn't let us hide behind vague language

he's specific about:

what Black students experience in predominantly white schools

how implicit bias shows up in classroom management

why "not seeing color" is actually harmful

what culturally responsive teaching actually requires

how to build authentic relationships across racial difference

and because he's a superintendent (not just a consultant), he understands the resistance

he addresses it directly instead of pretending it doesn't exist

the conversations it's creating

week 1: defensive "i don't treat students differently based on race" "this doesn't apply to me" "i'm already doing this work"

and what i'm hearing is: they've KNOWN all this

they've been telling us for years

we just weren't ready to hear it

if this book finally makes white teachers listen to what Black families have been saying... that's overdue but necessary

i'm a white teacher who thought i was "one of the good ones"

this book showed me how much i still have to learn

my biases i didn't recognize

my cultural blind spots

my assumptions about students

my curriculum gaps

it's uncomfortable. but discomfort means growth.
