Evon Walters – The Importance of Integrating Technology And Education
In the modern age, technology is one of the key aspects of successful learning. Technology is everywhere – in our homes, in our places of work, even in our pockets. Young people today have grown up with a standard of technology that has become integral to the way they live their lives, and it is for this reason that students demand the interactive educational potential that technology brings to schools. Technology allows students to learn at their own pace, while keeping them consistently engaged with education. It can also enhance the relationship between teachers and students; when teachers effectively integrate technology into the classroom, they help make learning more meaningful and fun.
Dr. Evon Walters believes anything that engages students with the educational process is worth investing in. Dr. Walters views education as the cornerstone of almost every successful and profitable individuals and societies, which is why he has dedicated his career to advancing educational systems across the country. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Dr. Walters began his professional career as the Dean of Multicultural Affairs at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Since then, he has held many esteemed positions, including Chairperson and Assistant Professor of Education at Olivet College in Michigan, Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services at Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania, and Executive Dean and Campus CEO at Suffolk County Community College in New York.
It was at Suffolk County Community College that Dr. Walters demonstrated his commitment to technology in the educational arena. In 2013, he was part of the initiative to build the new Student Success Center, which provides students with multiple academic services, such as registration, counseling, and advising, in a conveniently located, high-tech manner. After checking in at the concierge, students can enjoy a comfortably furnished environment while a dynamic, oversized LED display keeps students informed about their position in the queue. The lounge also provides students with self-serve kiosks where they can check information about their academic records, classes, and more, enabling them to utilize their queuing time more efficiently.
Dr. Walters said the project was developed to expand the college’s capacity to serve their students in a mindful, technologically savvy way that relates to their everyday experiences. It enhances the overall student experience by fostering student engagement, persistence, and success – crucial components of what defines first-rate higher education.
