Yes, the world is going to university and yes, we should find a way to measure quality of the educations doled out to prevent wasted funds on paper certifications that mean nothing more than a set amount of tuition payed. Perhaps it would help to implement standardized testing for certain under-graduation degrees similar to the board examinations doctors have to take to become certified practitioners; however, we need to take a step back even further and ask “Do people even NEED higher education to do their jobs?” and I think we’ll find the answer to that question is often “No”. Motivated individuals are going to be motivated. There are so many free educational resources available online (ex. MIT OpenCourseWare) it’s easy to teach yourself something if you want to learn it. Going to college and drinking with a peer group comprised of a bunch of other aimless individuals who are destined to extend their adolescence until their 30th birthdays isn’t going to inspire motivation in students who weren’t motivated in the first place. How can we deflate the education bubble? How can we remove the stigma associated with NOT going to college?
