Cry of Jazz - a rarely seen poetic visual essay on jazz from 1959 featuring the only known footage of Sun Ra's early Chicago band while they were still working more traditional forms interspersed with the filmmaker's musings on the place and changes of African American jazz and context. There is lots of beautiful high-contrast b/w Sun Ra footage and the music is really good.
The Cry of Jazz is an interesting short film from the late 50's that talks not only about jazz but the way race melds into it, and, wonder of wonders, united states black people actually get to tell their side and not be explained over. There is also an intense race debate. Very revealing indeed. Greta music by Sun Ra as well.
