Two or Three Things about “Law and Order” (1932)

Easily the best part is sheriff Landon convincing a dim murderer to be tried as the first official hanging in the town.

The latter’s cheerfulness at being killed is extremely unnerving. He seems to welcome death as long as it gets him in the history books.

Adding to the shock is seeing the murderer being playing by Andy Devine, famous for being a rotund comic, in an early dramatic role where he is super skinny.

The film is an odd duck, a missing link between silent and talkie pictures.

It switches from simple indoor chatting to a totally vivid outdoor gunfight massacre that is visual in the extreme for the time.

To me, this era of Walter Huston looks a lot like a young (director) Paul Thomas Anderson; who was later instrumental in aiding actor Daniel Day Lewis achieve character infamy in “There will be Blood”, a role seriously influenced by the persona of director/actor John Huston, Walter’s son who co-wrote this picture.
