Risk/Reward

Reiner was just sitting by himself staring at a halfway played-through chess game. It was the remnants of the previous match between Armin and the commander. The blonde decided to try to understand exactly how the results occurred. Reiner put several of the last pieces taken back where they were a few turns before the end. He chose the point that he felt the biggest change in the game was made.
He was actually proud of being able to know at what point everything came down to a single move. The book Erwin lent him before probably had more than a little to do with it. Reiner read the thing twice, after all. He put two fingers to his temples and thought out loud, “Exactly why would you put a risk so high… You won but look at what you have left…. How much was winning worth?” He mumbled idly as he studied the mostly imaginary scenario. He felt kind of silly imagining it being a real thing.
{ ♜ } Ɛarlier that day, Erwin and Armin had indeed played chess. The boy had been beside himself with anxiety at the prospect of playing a game with a man of such sharp intellect like Erwin, but as the game had progressed, he had quickly gained confidence, temporarily forgetting that he was going against his commanding officer and flowing with the game to an extent that pleased the older man. Rank had been temporarily forgotten, each lost in another world as they watched every move their opponent made. It was safe to say the game had been rather intense.
Time consuming in nature as chess was a game that could not be rushed, but thrilling in a sense that not many who did not comprehend the game could ever hope to understand. Of course, they couldn't prolong the game over an hour since they both had much work to do, thus the game was left out until time was regained so they could resume their 'battle'. Making his way over to chessboard, he tilted his head a bit curiously, wondering what Reiner was searching for so intently in those pieces.
'Exactly why would you put a risk so high?'
'How much was winning worth?'
Good questions. It seemed Reiner had studied just as he said he would. That made him proud for one reason or another. "It depends on whether the fight was worth the sacrifices."
