The last time we were shut down was in 2018, but not the whole California. At that time the unfortunate shark attack of a teenager. #eerie #eeriefeeling #surreal #beachclosure #coronavirus #covid #covid19 #virus #scary #apocalypse #nozombies #leucadia #encinitas #california #thehood #highway1 #highway101 #coasthighway #californiacoasthighway #californiacorornavirus #shark #sharkattack #beaconssharkattack #beachclosed #signofthetimes (at Beacons Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-vJ_mKnx7C/?igshid=se9wzt6md5jo

Coyote Mountain Near to my house there stands a small patch of woods where the remains of the original homestead stood before the land was parceled out. Years ago, at the edge of the patch of woods stood a large barn that has since been torn down. The remaining cement foundation was broken up and left in a pile. A family of coyotes have since taken up residence in the broken cement pile. I call it Coyote Mountain.
This past week, I decided to go back and explore the homestead area. On my way there, I found a dead raccoon. Something had been eating at it, but I couldn’t tell what or what had caused the death. I kept going.
I skirted around coyote mountain and entered the woods by a large pile of rusted farm equipment. The tiger lilies had returned, but not yet bloomed. The litter all over the place was just as I remembered it, nothing new, even pieces I recognized. Then I looked past the old filled-in well to the exposed ribs of a ravaged doe. It had been there maybe a month, but I noticed no smell. I figured it was probably eaten by the coyotes, but couldn’t tell cause of death.
Steering away from dead deer, I turned to see a skunk curled up in an old tractor tire. It was also dead. Again no smell. Not of skunk nor death. I moved to the back of the woods patch and looked back. Through the evening sun filtering through the trees I noticed a faint smokiness over the bodies of the deer and skunk. I glanced over at coyote mountain before suddenly being hit with the feeling that I *should not* be here. I quickly left.
I have always loved walking through the area and picking through the liter all over the ground. I’ve never been bothered by the coyotes and I have never found anything dead out there. I have never felt unwelcome in the space.
