You should read the Everlasting by Alix E Harrow, I loved it so much it ruined my life

Oh based on the summary it sounds a lot like The Six Deaths of the Saint by the same author, which I enjoyed. Now that I'm saying it I feel like I heard she was gonna expand it into a novel? In any case thans for the rec~

Oh man, I have STRONG FEELINGS about how good The Folk of the Air books are (for YA fantasy) and how bad ACOTAR is. AND I would argue Sarah J. Maas is doing a Temu version of Holly Black: Holly Black’s first novel, Tithe (2002), loosely follows the folk tale Tam Lin, in that a mortal girl has to save her faerie lover from a cruel faerie queen in a dramatic riddle-based showdown in front of the court. The epigraph in Tithe is a quote from “The Ballad of Tam Lin.” ACOTAR (the first book, not the whole series) is also a retelling of Tam Lin, and in my opinion, SJM’s sexy fairies wouldn’t have been as popular if HB’s hadn’t set the stage. Is this claim justified? I don’t care I just have STRONG FEELINGS.

I read HB’s most recent books, The Book of Night and The Thief of Night. They’re good! And I did feel there was an element of Holly Black saying, oh my children, let me remind you I was writing sad pretty men with tragic backstories when you still had your baby teeth; you want a “shadow daddy” I’ll GIVE you a goddamn shadow daddy.

AGREED in that SJM is temu HB. I do think the reason SJM is so big is because she hit the gold mine by appealing to the "hasn't read a book since middle school but wants to get into reading again" and "hasn't read for fun ever" demographics, meaning that her audience reads her first and HB second, and that's where the comparisons come from. But it is VERY clear who is the actual sexy fae author queen. DOES SJM HAVE SURGICALLY ALTERED ELF EARS???? I DON'T THINK SO. YOU KNOW WHO DOES???? THAT'S RIGHT

I am so so so sorry for being debbie downer all over your happy experience but NO because I HATE the narrative that you can be too cool to get baited by the sirens. Rip to all those other heroes, they just didn't try hard enough. Forget about real threats that feel inescapable, our heroes need to be one step ahead of every single obstacle on their path.

I went no contact without closure with my best friend of 13 years, and this was four years ago now. Still dream of her, still wonder what she's doing, still love her, but we cannot be friends again. I don't look her up or keep tabs because I will gain nothing from it. When I was done, I was done.

The way I see it is that sometimes you find a person who's puzzle pieces fit with yours. It makes you feel less lonely when someone is there to fill in your cracks. But then you grow, you change. Your puzzle pieces might start to become part of different picture. You no longer match and that's okay.

Part of life is knowing when it's time to let go and not look back. Your heart will ache, and it will heal.

Oh my god anon I am a bit teary eyed bc this feels like I sent it to myself. Best friends for 14 years, and this is the way it ended, not because I don't love her anymore but because I can't keep existing next to her and remain happy. Thank you for your kind words and sharing!

I was taking a roadtrip yesterday and decided to, having heard it was a good musical, pop Hadestown on to take up my first few hours. Promptly wound up SOBBING ON THE INTERSTATE I understand everyone who is insane about it now. Oh my gosh. So much stood out but in particular there is SO MUCH HOPE in wait for me (reprise), and hearing “show the way so we can see/show the way the world could be” KNOWING what is coming made me SICK it was so good. It was so awesome. ow

WELCOME TO THE MADHOUSE it is SUCH an insane musical, happy to have you onboard. The best part of Hadestown is All Of It. On a roadtrip rn and I think I will pop it on too

i only ask as someone who just read your last few posts but who never really read pjo but did enjoy the musical, what did you think of the lightning thief musical?

I think the musical is the best adaptation of the book, which is funny because it is neither casting accurate, nor plot accurate. Back when it first came out it charmed me right away with its low budget production and "the gods are DICKSSSS" line (rip, idk where that bootleg is, I never saw it again). I think it gets the heart of the story - Good Kid is so interesting because it isn't based on the book at all, but it totally COULD be. The Campfire Song is cool because at no point in the books do the demigods ever bond over how much the gods suck, but it is the unspoken solidarity between them the entire time. Percy forgetting he has a dad and singing about his mom is just. Such a good moment and makes me so emo. Annabeth and Clarisse sharing a dramatic war duet is more hype than any scene in the TV show ever. It has all the simple, sincere, fun, creative spirit that was packed in the books, AND it is played without making fun of anything - The Tree on the Hill makes me cry a bit. Basically, middle school fun at its best, I listen to it every time I return home from the summer vacation, ily TLT musical
