Omg I feel so passionately about this, yes you're RIGHT birkins are ugly af— and somehow— made even uglier by the manufactured exclusivity that has become synonymous with the bag. Like the silhouette of the bag is super angular and dated, it looks very... waspish UNLESS it's worn and beaten to shit and it loses that structure and angularity. Famously Jane Birkin who the bag was made for and named after treated the bag like shit bc its leather so it's durable, she stuck pins into it and attached her prayer beads and little trinkets from her travels
Like she used to stuff it so full she couldn't close it so you can't even see the iconic buckle lock that's the trademark birkin look.
Jane Birkins bag from the 80s vs a new Birkin:
And obviously after Jane passed away a few years ago people pointed out that the way people treat Birkins is antithetical to the way Jane treated hers = people decided no, actually bags look cooler when they're well worn and have trinkets and personality and instead of the fashion community collectively coming to the realisation that overconsumption is bad and maybe you just need durable pieces that you love and wear for a long time we fucking got this :
MORE overconsumption to manufacture authenticity 😍.
Anyway, they're literally fundamentally uncool bc the silhouette is ugly and you can't even make it less ugly bc no one is buying a 70k bag to beat to shit so.... it's for losers imo
i love how we started with charles cheating rumors and ended with a fashion history lesson from the moots !! tysm for this it's so INTERESTING
i love the way jane birkin wore hers bc you can tell she's using it like it's meant to be used? it's a handbag first n foremost, you wear it not the other way round!! i love seeing accessories that are well loved and tell a story about the person they belong to. but then at the same time like. you can't fake that sort of authenticity!!! overconsumption in general is a fucking disease (see: people buying a ton of stanleys just to have a Collection) and when you're buying a ton of shit just to make your stuff fit an aesthetic, that's nowhere near authentic or original at all. that's why i love seeing backpacks etc that are worn n have mismatched keychains and all that bc you can tell someone loves that backpack! they put other things they love on it! they're not matching an aesthetic or following a trend they're being themselves! you don't see that with these curated "perfect" collections of accessories ://
agreed with waspish silhouette, that's the perfect description! it's the kind of bag i would associate with a snooty rich lady 😭 which reminds me, idk if anyone on the dash has seen dubai bling (its a guilty pleasure don't @ me) but there was an entire storyline abt whether an influencer's birkin was fake or not, all because she took it to an outdoor party n kept the dust cover on. then one of the women accusing her ended up on an insta account dedicated to spotting fake birkins, apparently hers was too 😭 sth sth projection.. (also racism bc the women doing the accusing are arab and the influencer they accused is indian and they keep shitting on her for stupid reasons... but that's another discussion)
