Slumber Party ‘57 (1976)

Just released the 7th edition of my En fin de nuit VHS compilation of ‘80s and ‘90s late-nite soft-core programming.

Two things remained popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s: drive-in sex comedies and a ‘50s nostalgia revival on-set by American Graffiti (1973). Slumber Party ‘57 (1976) manages to sh-boom sh-boom them both, and a few years before Bob Clark’s Porky’s (1981) at that.

Mostly forgotten, Slumber Party ‘57 is a rather pedestrian sex-ploitative flick, where questionable cinematic decisions and a fun ‘50s soundtrack featuring The Platters and Jerry Lee Lewis keep you going. I only ever saw this run once on Bleu nuit.

There are also a slew of trailers for other period sex comedies and some really weird late-night commercials.

This was digitized from my Selectavision disc, an analog video technology developed by RCA that failed spectacularly but I find charming. It technically looked better than VHS but the wear-and-tear on the cartridges means there are some glitchy moments in the presentation.

A new VHS compilation series — an ode to the late nite, soft-core programming I’d sneakily watch during my misspent youth. Sybil Danning, Shannon Tweed, Laura Gemser, weirdo early ‘90s ads, phone sex commercials, some obligatory video game content, it’s all there. For now I’ve released five volumes, with more to follow.

With the exception Vol. 4, which is one of the earliest hardcore super-hero parodies, the other titles are films I first saw in this late-nite context, on the fabled program Bleu nuit on TQS or on First Choice/TMN.

Volume 8 deviates from the formula a bit and recreates a very wild tape I had, the one inserted in the VCR one fateful night when I realized the adult channel was un-scrambled.

It goes without saying that these films contain major trigger warnings. It’s mysoginistic ´70s & ‘80s soft porn. You know what you’re getting into.
