Telekinesis Bring Acclaimed New Album to Rough Trade NYC on Tuesday
Seattle multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Michael Benjamin Lerner has been making the kind of music that AllMusic says “splits the difference between summery indie rock and buoyant power pop” for close to a decade. Under the name Telekinesis, Lerner plays all of the instruments on his recorded work but performs live with a full band. Following a year on the road with Teenage Fanclub, he returned with the fifth Telekinesis studio album, Effluxion (stream it here), out on Merge Records this past February. “Effluxion is often a mood piece, calling upon the playful energy of youth. But amidst the swaying toe-tappers, Lerner makes sure to crank up the guitars,” says Soundblab. “The jubilant record boasts catchy earworms and unfaltering optimism, proving to be the project’s most approachable effort to date.” And AllMusic adds: “This LP is a real treat for power-pop obsessives and anyone who likes some melodies with their rock and roll.” With a new album comes a new tour, and to that end, Telekinesis (above, doing “Ad Infinitum Pt. 2” for WFUV FM) play Rough Trade NYC on Tuesday night. Sontalk and the Royal Arctic Institute open.
