Prologue
Chris remembered the smell of their first meeting more than the woman herself. It was clear she had been sitting in her own filth for some time before they stumbled upon her, he wanted nothing more than to turn and leave. The moment he tried his ten-year-old sister slapped his arm,
“Don’t act like you lost your heart, Chrissy!” She shouted while running over to the only other occupant of the fourth-floor apartment complex that was condemned for perhaps longer than Chris had been alive. He scowled, not because he didn't want to help, but because he did. His sister knew him best that he was a bleeding heart, “Claire, we can’t take every stray cat on the block nor do we help every person who's in the same pickle as us.”
They both knew he was more so reasoning with himself. Still, he approached the woman, her name was Mei. A half-Japanese half-Mexican woman who was abandoned by her family for a reason she dare not say. The siblings had that in common with her and bonded over it, she would help Claire with her homework and would teach Chris both Spanish and Japanese. All she ever wanted in return was that they wouldn’t forget her, Chris would be by her side whenever she had a panic attack induced by firecrackers or gunshots and she would be by Claire’s side every time it thundered. During calm days when Chris was between odd jobs, he’d lay on the old mattresses with his sister as she drew the most incredible house. She’d claim she wanted a house with over a hundred rooms, one for every cat and dog she’d adopt, a witch’s tower for her to live in, and a wizard’s tower for Mei to live in. Chris would help her in sketching details from what he learned for the construction jobs he took and the blueprint looked like a dream, as it would stay.
He also remembered the day perfectly, Mei was writhing in pain begging for a special kind of chocolate bread downtown
