Ah, it’s that time of year again when I get ecstatically excited whenever I see an insect. Any insect! Life is returning after the long winter! Värmland, Sweden (6 April 2026).

Egle the queen of the Grass-Snakes, 1930-40, by Kazys Šimonis. Lithuanian artist.
Based on a Lithuanian fairy tale, where Egle, a young woman, is nearly tricked into marriage to the king of the Grass Snakes, but manages to outwit him.
I love the colours and dreamy feel of this painting. Also, Egle’s body, which seems to end in several snakes, reminds me quite a bit of the Scythian anguiped goddess.

Zeus was the ring bearer at Nico and Egle's wedding! 😭❤️💍
