Millions of Muslims are celebrating Eid-al-Adha around the world. I'm part Muslim from my mother's side(many don't know this) something that makes me very proud, to be enriched by the best of two cultures. Maybe the reason why my friend thought it was okay to ask me when he didn't understand: "Why are there two Eids?".This made me think, there might be a few who don't know about Eid. Eid means 'feast' or 'festival' Every year Muslims celebrate Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al- Adha, the names are shortened and addressed as Eid. Eid-al- Fitr which means festival of breaking of the fast- celebrated at the end of the month of Ramadan(they don't eat or drink from dawn to sunset for a month, devoting themselves to prayer and faith) The five pillars of Islam religion is fasting, faith, prayer, charity and pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, this is the basis of how Muslims live their lives. Eid-al- Adha means feast of sacrifice - is celebrated just 2 months after Eid-al- Fitr, the same time as when Muslims perform the Hajj, the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. Eid-al- Adha coincides with the end of the annual pilgrimage. Hajj is a once in a lifetime activity that is seen as a duty for most. Festivals in Islam are celebrated based on the lunar calendar, which means the dates of both Eids change each year, but Eid-al-Adha is always just after 2 months after Eid-al- Fitr. On both Eids Muslims go for special prayers to their local mosque and have celebrations with family and friends, Eid meals are a big part of these celebrations. This year with the pandemic still at large many are not able to come together to celebrate Eid, families are separated, grandparents haven't seen grandchildren in months together, these are of course difficult and trying times. I'm missing my family for certain this year, my grandmom's smile, the smell of her attar soaked dupatta when she hugs, the smell of biriyani, stuffing our mouth with all the confections, sitting together after that happy meal to play some games or sharing stories. Let us pray for better days ahead.. Insha Allah.. Sending prayers and love to everyone this Eid. #eidaladha #eidmubarak #eidmemories #eidfamily #eidmeal #eid https://www.instagram.com/p/CDRhYl_J9xm/?igshid=71mbg5esvb93
