Typical Dutch

Today not so much about recipes but about the sweets and treats from our country Holland. You probably all know the traditional Gouda cheese and the weed thats those crazy duchies are selling! yes it’s true and typical dutch. but do you know the sweets called ‚drop’ it’s practically licorice in english like the all sorted licorice. Most of the dutch people like the licorice and we have a sweet and salty version and a version combined with wine gums.

Well these ones you probably knew before, but we have our own version of the sausage roll. with minced meat with spices and rolled into bread. besides that we have our own brand of smoked sausage and serve it with bread and a special sauce. we call it ‚broodje unox’  it’s something we like to eat in the cold wintertime when finished with iceskating or a long winter walk. 

stroopwafels 

You may know the ’stroopwafels”  last year our infamous stroopwafels became populair in New York.  a store ‚the good batch’ introduced the stirrupwaffles in phonetic. this stow started selling the waffles with some ice of red fruit. if your a sweet tooth please buy one when you see them in the supermarket or when visiting Holland, or New York! i think you should eat them while they are hot, the caramel inside will start te get runny it’s so yummy, especially when you heat them up above your cup of coffee or tea.

Eierkoeken

Last but not least the ‚eierkoeken’ in english: egg cakes. this is so fluffy, sweet and light that it’s the perfect coffee snack or for the small sweet carvings. it contains a high quantity sugar and they are actually very sweet. sot this is definitely a good cake for a sweet tooth. make sure when you visit the netherlands to eat besides the gouda cheese also the stroopwafels and the eierkoeken!
