The handyman bill au is so funny and good because like. forcing a dimension-rending chaos demon into customer service and effectively making him have the same level of threat and energy as Season 1 King from The Owl House just has infinite potential for goofs and possible character development for bill
The intro scene of Chapter 5 is really interesting to me because it clearly tells us that Kris starts dying without the SOUL, but I have a lot of questions:
1. If they die without the SOUL, then how was Kris alive pre-Chapter 1 Intro, where they wake up with the SOUL in their body?
Does that mean Kris had it before Chapter 1, but a connection was placed sometime after they got it, allowing us to spy on Kris? Is Kris' original soul stored somewhere else (like maybe the Vessel, who is also a human that needs to be kept alive with a SOUL) or totally gone?
2. (Going off of the Caller in Ch4 saying "without soul [in dark world]... Kris will..") If Kris can stay alive in the Light World without a SOUL (but start taking damage by going to a Dark World), what was Kris doing in between Ch4 and Ch5?
I doubt it's hanging out with Susie at Castle Town, because she seems to have slept there and makes no mention of what they were doing with Kris. I can only guess it's Roaring gc bullshit lol
3. What happens to Kris and the SOUL when the game ends? Is it possible to keep the SOUL without the connection like they did pre-Ch1? Or, would severing the connection just erase the SOUL entirely (so they die)?
(There's the Spamton and Mad Mew Mew boss fights that have strong themes of connections, puppetry, the SOUL, and freedom - and they both have different endings...)
Kris is genuinely fucked if 1. Undertale rules for the soul still apply in Deltarune - that is, a human will flat-out die without a soul, 2. the Player SOUL needs to connect with the Player to exist and 3. their original soul is nowhere to be found.
(Frisk gets to live a happy ending in the Pacifist route, without being surveilled by the SOUL... but there's so many instances where it's stressed that Kris needs the SOUL and we will be "banished" at the end of the game as per the prophecy. There's so many that I doubt it won't be relevant to the ending of Deltarune)
Handyman AU Bill is so funny to me. I'd imagine the Pines family would just like... ignore him and put him in timeout if he did something really annoying. They just learn to ignore his schemes lmao and on the off chance that they do hang out, they treat him like he's just the world's most angular and talkative grumpy cat
BillFord and ShadowVanilla scratch an itch in my brain because they're both dealing with the question of... what if you felt like you finally found your equal and felt a deep connection with them after years of isolation. And what if you were horrible for each other. What if your twisted reflection knew exactly how to push your buttons and made you feel seen for the first time in your life
Toby Fox and Itoki Hana did so good with "I guess I'm in love" it's the music that plays in my head now whenever there's some sort of magical moment I'm experiencing with someone
Kris slash theory (where Kris, not the Roaring Knight, is the one who downs Susie and Ralsei in the cutscene after defeating the Roaring Knight, coined by DoubleDan on YouTube 2025) is really interesting to me. It makes sense because of the placement of the slash, but I just wonder why Kris would do the following:
1. willingly jump to Susie's defense multiple times in the dark world, independent of player influence, knowing that she can be defeated without really being harmed (see: the Swoon stat just causing her to be downed, not dying), then
2. down Susie, independent of player influence.
3. Not take Ralsei down in one fell swoop also, who may be reacting to the betrayal ("H... How could you..?")
The only explanations I can think of are the following:
1. Susie is a distraction to the Roaring Knight, stopping her from picking up Undyne. Susie fighting alone against the Knight also runs the risk of Susie endangering herself, especially if the Knight is backed into a corner so to speak. Kris, heavily implied to work with the Roaring Knight, could not risk her dying or the Knight failing to pick up Undyne, and thus knocks her out through nonlethal means.
2. Kris knows Ralsei is aware of the Player and the Prophecy. He's aware that Kris cares deeply about their friends, but directly letting on to the Player that they betrayed Susie may lead to problems/fights down the line that he will not be able to mediate. So Kris trusts that Ralsei will at least keep his mouth shut
3. Kris just really doesn't like Susie being scared or left behind
This theory is so interesting to me because it makes Kris so much more compelling and complex as a character. Seeing how they work out their goal of protecting & enjoying the company of their friends and Working with the Knight to fulfill the prophecy/possibly find Dess... really makes you feel like every time you understand them, suddenly something happens and you know nothing about them. What a character
I've always found it unsatisfying that the community has separate explanations for the "ROOTS" and "GALLERY" Prophecy panels in Deltarune. Since they're the two single-word prophecy panels with very non-descript icons, I think it would be more elegant (and fun!) to think of the two as related.
So here's my idea:
What if ROOTS refers to a Root directory, and GALLERY refers to a Folder file containing images (the sprites of the Deltarune characters)?
Every time there's a strong reference to Roots in Deltarune, there's also references to the different levels of reality in the game:
1. Before Spamton's fight, "Digital Roots" plays as a soundtrack. Spamton mentions Heaven and wants to escape the game itself, wishing for Kris to cut his strings so he can Fly.
2. In the MANTLE game before fighting ERAM, "BIT ROOTS" plays. In the rooms where this track plays, the map resembles Hometown itself as pointed out by Goldpro in their ROOTS theory. In this case, we (highest level of reality) are playing Kris in Deltarune (lower level of reality) who is playing MANTLE (lowest level of reality - highly abstract).
In both instances, we face the fact that theres different levels of "reality" in the game (Im thinking of the game here under the framework of Device Theory by m0llystars) - and somehow, Roots have something to do with it. It seems natural to think that "ROOTS" could be trying to refer to something deeper than a place where we find roots of Hometown trees, or a place that has something to do with Kris's trauma.
It could be a place that signifies the Root (Directory) of Hometown, from which you would have a Tree (Directory). This would make sense with how the Prophecy panel has a "Home" icon and trees! (I dont think we will ever directly interact with the game's code, so we will have something that signifies it instead.)
Gallery, on the other hand, plays before we fight some bosses (Ch1, 2, 4). I think this is why people have been theorizing that Gallery should have something to do with bosses. But "Gallery" here really is a strange word choice - I feel like something is missing if we are just thinking of the Gallery in relation to the bosses. If we think of it as something that is related to the different levels of abstraction/reality in Deltarune, then I can imagine that it would be an actual Gallery, containing the sprites of in game characters.
With Susie's meta knowledge increasing (due to Flowery explaining the battle UI to her), Noelle attempting to glitch out of her reality in the Ch5 weird route, and Dess being Trapped in the Code. I think Deltarune is building up to ROOTS and GALLERY being locations where we have to face the layer of reality that we are playing in (and that Kris, Noelle, and Gang are living in).
