"Haven't you heard the news?"
Ingo looked up from his locker by his desk. You had just placed a cup of coffee there, sweetened and piping hot. He adjusted the tie around his neck as he faced you with a curious look.
"I haven't," he implored. "What about it?"
"Strange portals have been opening up in Alola," you filled him in while you lazily leaned your weight against the table. "Kinda freaky."
Pale hands thumbed the silk indigo fabric. "I'm sure whatever is happening there, they have it under control," The station master reassured both you and himself. "The Aether Project is known for great things."
You hummed in thought, unconvinced. Beside you, the purple flames of Chandelure licked and crackled in the air. It let out a haunting chirp, which you responded with by absent-mindedly petting one of its many dark, spiral arms.
"Just be careful out there," Was all you could soberly mutter.
Slate grey eyes regarded you for a moment, concern clouding them like rain clouds before he finally donned his long, flowing black coat. From his belt, he reached for one of his Pokéballs to recall his Ace before sliding a gloved hand over yours.
"Is there something else you're not telling me, love?" Ingo asked lowly, his gaze boring into yours in an attempt to study your thoughts. As always, he can never tell what you were thinking. You were a mystery and a half to him and his brother, and that what made you so interesting. So intriguing. So you.
You flitted your eyes up at him before casting them downward this way and that. You were avoiding the question. "I can't-"
Bang-!
"I am Emmet!" Came the loud declaration of Ingo's twin in white, who flashed a pose at the office door that he kicked with equal extravagant gusto. "Pokémon Battle right on schedule. Mhmm!"
His arms bent at his sides, knuckles snapped like magnets on his hips. Emmet beamed at you, then to the way your hands connected to Ingo's. "Brother, how dare you," he grinned slyly at his twin. "Public Displays of Affection is against the rules at work. Yup!"
Ingo raised a brow at him as he strode over to the door with you in tow. "The confines of the office are far from the public eye," he pointed out. "That is what you said last week when I caught you two on the de-"
What happened next, happened too fast, yet everything and everyone seemed to move like tar.
Ingo suddenly felt his entire weight yanked backwards with such monstrous strength, he was sure his arm would pop out of the socket of his shoulder. The floor was suddenly crackling with an unexplainable energy, his feet surrounded by a dark, writhing vortex.
How did you know when to pull him back, Emmet could never comprehend.
How did you know of the phenomenon in Alola that wouldn't be printed on Unovan paper until next week, Ingo would never know.
But they would never forget the confusion of watching the way you shifted your weight and used gravity like a double-edged sword, to pull Ingo out of harms way.
And the horror of watching you get swallowed by the earth.
As you fell down the rabbit hole of thunderstorms, down the dark tunnels that echoed the shrill, grieving wails of your lover's calling out your name as though that alone was enough to bring you back, you held your breath and counted down to ten.
When you reached zero, your head broke through the murky shadows and past clouds, down to a very familiar, ancient ocean. You blink at the sudden brightness that assaulted you and you sigh in relief despite the deafening sound of the wind howling in your ears.
One thousand, four hundred and thirty-one cycles, finally over.
One thousand, four hundred and thirty-one times that a family was torn, that you finally put a stop to.
It was worth it. It will all be worth it.
After all, you already forgot who was calling for you in the back of your mind.
