It had been a few years since Eli had been standing on this porch, but if anything he thought that just made him more uncomfortable than he liked to admit. He didn't get uncomfortable, he didn't feel shame, and when he came too close to either of those he got mad or he shot up and either way it helped burn away the sensation that he was anything or anywhere he didn't want to be. 

It was impossible to cling to now when he felt like he was begging for favors, when he was just another one of Eileen's kids, just as reckless and just as lost. It had been Jay's idea, and even putting it like that made it sound like he'd had much of a choice. The man had to go back to California eventually. He didn't know if Cole was going with him, hadn't asked enough about the man or his daughter, but someone with most of the rebellion riding on his shoulders couldn't waste his time trying to babysit a junkie. Especially not one with only twelve days of sobriety, probably more than he'd had all year.

His fist hits the door before he's stepping back, more nervous than he likes just what Eileen will have to say to him. It's followed by a brief glance over his shoulder at Jay. His almost constant shadow since Christmas, and it's probably why the next words lack bite. "You're an asshole," he says.
