You’re spot on. You only use the latter version when you’ve become very familiar and close with someone and you’re generally informal with them in other broader language terms.

Definitely informal and rude if you’re not familiar with the person, I’d stick with vous. Weird that it would advise you that way.
it is weird that it keeps primarily using the informal version in 90% of the lessons, but i’m very relieved to be aware of the difference now. cheers everybody!
