Americans are beginning to understand the importance of federal agencies like the Bureau of Labor Statistics and how its unbiased, nonpartisan information is vital to a functioning economy and the livelihoods of everyday people.
Earth to the Senate: Don’t confirm EJ Antoni.
White House says Antoni was ‘bystander … in town for meetings’ as video shows him in crowd of Trump supporters
E.J. Antoni said the Bureau of Labor Statistics should suspend a monthly estimate that recently upset President Donald Trump.
Arthur Delaney at HuffPost:
WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggested getting rid of the agency’s closely watched monthly jobs estimate after the most recent estimate angered the president. In an interview with Fox Business published Tuesday, Heritage Foundation chief economist E.J. Antoni claimed the the numbers are unreliable. “Until it is corrected, the BLS should suspend issuing the monthly job reports but keep publishing the more accurate, though less timely, quarterly data,” Antoni said. “Major decision-makers from Wall Street to D.C. rely on these numbers, and a lack of confidence in the data has far-reaching consequences.” Trump fired the previous head of the BLS, Erika McEntarfer, after an unfavorable employment situation report for the month of July, which included downward revisions to estimates for May and June.
Trump said the numbers were “rigged” to hurt him politically, a claim for which the White House has come up with absolutely no evidence whatsoever. In his announcement Monday that Antoni would be his nominee to replace McEntarfer, Trump said, “E.J. will ensure that the Numbers released are HONEST and ACCURATE.” The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Antoni’s proposal to get rid of the monthly jobs report. Asked about the idea during a briefing on Tuesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the reports would continue. “That’s the hope, and that these monthly reports will be data that the American people can trust,” Leavitt said. Instead of amplifying Trump’s conspiracy theory, Antoni told Fox Business the BLS surveys of businesses are unreliable due to lower response rates since the coronavirus pandemic.
What a moron! Potential Trump BLS nominee E.J. Antoni is considering the elimination of the monthly jobs report based on dubious political grounds.
